Re: To all at /. and TW

Hi Daj,
We should be able to interest companies as part of their "Ethical Policy" especially in something as worthwhile as the World Community Grid. At the very least it would be the right thing to do for a big business + they would get the kudos of soaring through the ranks and it would be a good advert for a company.

I've tried in 2 major corporations to get this on the radar but, and it's a big but, I always encounter the Security Expert who sees a risk in everything that is connected with the Internet. I write this from work surrounded by about 1500 PC's incidentally all IBM's instead of all running the corporate screensaver they could all be contributing to the work here at the WCG.

Try as I might I cannot convince a security expert that running the WCG client is safe. As all communications with the WCG server are encrypted and as it's medical science being carried out here the accuracy of the data is paramount. The agent is none intrusive and does not contrary to popular belief slow down your PC apart from steal away ~25Mb of your PC's memory capability.

I've been running the UD agent first at Grid.org and now here at WCG for over 6 years of run time and in any of that time has it caused me a problem - No.

What would help us is for IBM to promote the ethical policy idea of the WCG to their big customers, such as the one that I work for - top down instead of bottom up. With the research here contributing to knowledge about Cancer, HIV/Aids, Malaria, Alzheimer's, MS, Diabetes etc etc I'm sorry to keep banging on but it's worth fighting for.

If there is anyone out there that is empowered to make these decisions the WCG needs your help

Re: To all at /. and TW

Creating an interesting environment would keep peoples attention and their attention could be and most likely would be converted to points for the project. As Beren has repeatedly said - promoting healthy competiton would also further the project by keeping peoples interest.

After the initial onslaught of poor attitude, lack of humor and heavy handed admins that most of us from TW met with on our arrival here I dropped the client from all 4 of my machines, how many have also done so due to that type of thing or because of boredom? This is a valid question and it needs to be considered, are you driving crunchers away by walking too straight of a line?

The only reason I ever even consider coming here or making a post here is because the TW forums are down...boredom drives me here for a short stint but it also drives me away after a very short time as well.

I'd say someone needs to think about it if they plan future projects, a fun and relaxed forum can do wonders for any site as far as keeping interest high, try it, you may find a huge increase in numbers.

In my opinion as it currently stands I'd have to say - These forums are piss poor at best.

Re: To all at /. and TW

Hi Crypt,

That would be a fair comment if TribalWar had entered these forums with any kind of respect for the existing members of the World Community Grid. Unfortunately as Geck0 has demonstrated in the post above that is not TribalWar's style and obscenity and abuse is the nature of TribalWar's game.

Unfortunately this had to be dealt with heavy handedly as I think was only appropriate at the time (and still is) and as I say in an earlier post this caused considerable damage to the fun and relaxed forums that existed before TribalWars arrival.

I'm all for healthy competition and I would love to see your team posting those 355,000 points a day again - hence my original post but it needs to be healthy competition with mutual respect for our sucesses as at the end of the day we are just one big team "Team WCG"

We are not driving crunchers away as the 51 years of commitment yesterday to this fine project demonstrates. This post is just a virtual prod to see if I could wake up the sleeping giant of /. and the gusto that characterised TW's early successes.

Take care
Regards
Dave

God, I am really pissed!

I had taken a bunch ot time to write a scaything retort. Then I re-read your post and realized that, perhaps for the first time, I agree with the basic tenor (but not all of the contents) of your post, David.

Foul, darn it!

I completely agree that it is vital that we all share a basic mutual respect for each other's efforts and that we actively work together to achieve this worthwhile and critical objective.

My differences with you are for this moment, irrelevant. Suffice only to say that I strongly believe in freedom of speech (not "heavy handedness"); that political correctness can never be used to disguise the truth; that if we are truly a World Community then we MUST find a way to communicate and work effecively with each other; and that the Gosh-darned Forums are incredibly boring and really do need to be redone immediately!)

Just because I may vehemently disagree with you at times does not mean that I do not share the same objective.

For example, I understand and agree with GeckO's post. To focus on his use of profanity is just a "straw dog" to avoid the valid points which he made. Even if I did not agree with him, I welcome his honest opinion. In either case, why would I get all screwed up over a post? Who cares? Just read it and move on.

Real tolerance means allowing people to be different when you personally disagree with everything that they say; and when they are really pissing you off so badly that you probably would indeed strangle them if you could only get your hands around their neck!

So, what's wrong with that?

As to TW, we need to let this puppy go. They are collectively bored and want nothing further to do with WCG. Despite what anyone says, no one is to blame. It's the nature of the beast. And frankly, WCG interest's would not be well served if most TWers were active posters at WCG. Believe me.

I do believe that we can still cultivate positive ongoing relationships with people like Beren, Thrill, Crypt, Gecko, Strider, Phyzxs and the others if we are a bit more flexible. I've spent considerable time with them. These guys really are a cut above.

Beren, in particular, could be invaluable to WCG if we would just take the time and effort to include him. He is a decent, pleasant and kind person. Ironically, perhaps to many WCGers, he is also a devout Christian (in the good sense of that term) and everybody at TW knows it.

No, this is not the Beren Fan Club, GeckO. And no, this is not a subtle display of homoeroticism, Thrill. But he is one of the best f#$king internet forum moderators that I have ever seen. If we can get him aboard, we should.

It feels good to be able to write a somewhat positive post again. I've missed it.

Good luck, Dave. peace

(somewhat ironically, this post has been edited for profanity - nelsoc)

Re: To all at /. and TW

Get you own forum going, team newletters, member pages, an IRC server so you can get in touch with each other. Lots and lots of lovely stats and before you know it interest in WCG would return and this boring old crunching in search of cures and treatments for some of Mankind most terrible ailments could almost be called fun.

Time for this tired old fart to add his 2 cents....amd I really dont care who I offend.....

David..... get a life... obviously you are obsessed with the WCG. I was glad when you were removed as a Community Admin. It looked as if you owned the WCG for a while with your posts.

Now you are whinning that /. doesnt have a web site. Big F******* Deal.

Obviously /. is doing something right ... their points prove that. Loose the heavy hitters on your team and what do you have....? Even with the heavy hiters you are suffering from /. envy.

TW... I can take or leave...But would I let my daughter marry a TW member is an interesting question.

I dont know .. who is more aggravating..... TW with their drive by postings or you with your incessant whinning.

Now another interesting point that has been made.....

Look at these forums and its the same Hundred or so posting. Does this tell you something?

People are crunching, and they really dont care about TW or MOT or competition.

Careful, Harvey, you're liable to start a fan club.

Not that you give a crap. But that's exactly why I'd join it. wink
