cool Re: Overheating here!

Those who are worried about over heating -- why don't you just click the 'use as screen saver only' checkbox on the program? Then it'll only run your CPU at 100% when u leave your computer idling. Assuming u actually do stuff on your comp rather than leave it idling all the time that will give your comp plenty of time to chill out cool

Btw that's the option I use and I leave my comp on overnight so this thing runs all night and I have not had any problems.

Re: Overheating here!

yeah, i just found that out. However, I believe you can put the program into snooze mode. But, that only lasts for a few minutes. I believe that you can also close the program, so that at least while you are using the computer, the program won't be burning the processor out.

smile ZZZZZZzzzzzzz

Been there done.......
You can change the snooze mode time by clicking the
task bar icon for the "Device".
Next click on preferences (the Check sign).
In the Upper left hand corner is a box with two options.
One for running ONLY as a screen saver and one to change time
Snooze Time.
119 min. is the max delay setting for it.
BE SURE TO CLICK APPLY BUTTON.
The "Device" runs at a LOW priority.
Or; It will back off the instant any other your programs ask the CPU
to use the systems resources.
I recommend leaving the Screen saver Check Box blank
and setting the screen save to off (desktop/properties/screen saver)
to see if your system can (easily) game , surf, etc.
Crunch on!

P.s.
If you wana be COOL; Clean out the Dust-Bunnies from
the CPU heat sync!

Re: Overheating here!

I have been running the client for the last 7 days(168 hours), non stop on my Toshiba Satellite 2.53GHz laptop without a single problem.
If laptops are so fragile, it would have melted mine by now.

Most computers built in the last 5 years can take advantage of a "speed step" type technology that prevents damage to the cpu by lowering the speed of the processor when it gets to dangerous temperatures, and this includes laptops.

Computers are designed to do processing. That is just a plain and simple fact. They are designed to run at 100%. If your computer cant, you need to talk to the manufacturer/reseller of your machine.

I administer quite a few servers that are always around 90%-100% usage, and these also have uptimes in the 150 day range.

If you are so afraid that it will damage your machine, you should probably just go ahead and put it back in the box it came in and never touch it again, because at some point you might spike your processor to 100% playing a game.

If you dont want to help with the project, then dont. Don't be a whiner. Its always a good idea to do research yourself before you start to complain about something.

Re: Overheating here!

I had been planning on installing this to my laptop as well as my desktop computers, is the risk of overheating really such that i should reconsider installing it on my laptop? (P4 2.8)

Well, since it is not possible to reduce the system load to 50% e.g. I would not recommend it. A notebook is not designed for running at 100% 7/24. It should not be a problem for the CPU but the Harddisk or other devices will probably get damaged if its temperature is always above 45°C. Install a tool that monitors the temperature of your CPU + HD!

For laptops, I have to side with the 'I don't see the problem' group. Reputable mfg's must engineer their products to run at the specified max operating conditions. HDD's max is ~ 55 C, max CPU die temp ~ 100 C.

With hmonitor installed on my IBM T23

With WCG running: CPU = 70C, HDD = 43C
Without WCG running: CPU = 54-58C, HDD = 48C

Of course, with WCG running, the fan is continuously running.

I'm guessing the HDD temp is higher without WCG running because the fan is not running as much.

Re: Overheating here!

There is no option to diminish cpu usage. This program should have one. Setting the program to only kick in when in screen saver mode means it will go to 100 percent (and stay there) when you aren't around to put out the flames.

Application priority has nothing to do with cpu utilization. They are apples and auto parts.

Whatever tweaks have been implemented in the past two days seem to have improved things a bit for me. I still wouldn't use this prog on a laptop until it's cpu usage could be adjusted.

Re: Overheating here!

Quick note for those with AMD Thunderbird processors...
(I recall someone posting something about them but cant find it)

Thunderbird processors at 1.33Ghz and lower did not incorporate a thermal protection diode within the B core model. The C core model with 1.33GHz and 1.4Ghz implemented some kind of thermal protection but not as advanced as that available with the Intel CPU's at the time.

I am running a 1.33 Thunderbird on WCG for the past 5 days at 100%with no problems - temp is at constantly 67 degrees C, thanks to a larger fan installed when it was first purchased. I cant comment on the long term effects however the CPU has been throttled for the past 5 years with no noticeable downtime.

If you are running a Thunderbird ensure you have sufficient cooling and overheating will not be a problem.

Re: Overheating here!

I have had no problems like those listed below. While my CPU is processing a work unit I am at about 40-50% CPU usage. I can still do plenty of operations in the foreground while the work unit processes. Maybe you need to trade in that dinosaur of a computer you're working with and join the rest of us in the 21st century. IBM and the good people at World Community Grid are not trying to take advantage of anybody. Get your slow PC and narrow-minded viewpoints out of here!

Really! 100%?! You must be kidding. You also must be kidding to think I'll install *another* piece of software to prevent it. What monkey wrote this software with zero consideration to the user's computer? This does not make me think well of IBM, not at all.

Uninstalling...after only 15 minutes! Jeesh, try to help some people. Give them 1% and they take 100%. frustrated

Notify me when you figure out how not to take advantage of someone trying to help. And finally, you should reveal this serious flaw up front, before anything is downloaded. Now I get to waste time cleansing my registry of this trash. Jeesh.

Re: Overheating here!

I've been running my laptop at 100% 24/7 for five years. I have spacers underneath to keep the heat from warping my desk, but the computer works just fine. No problems mate.
