Gerald. I got the I5-2430M Quad. They wanted a real preimum to put an I7 in it. It really is a road machine and the crunching is secondary. Still it should contribute some. I had to pay $30 extra to get the bronze color . It was silly I know but I really like that color.Well that is a real good cpu--I paid 998.00 for XPS15 with I7 at Frys in Austin also a 7200 rpm hard drive-- |

Keithhenry. I don't remember it working like you describe. I thought that all the memory would just run at the slower speed...given what all else you said about compatibility. What I remember is probably specific to one machine but, I just don't know. I have ordered from Crucial before without any issues; hopefully your experience will be as problem free as mine was. To be honest, that was an explanation I was given several years ago when I got extra memory (with a faster speed) to add to a machine at work. Crucial really wants to sell you memory to replace what you have rather than add to it and that's not a bad thing necessarily. You have the same type of memory with the same speed that way. I just made sure that I ordered memory to add that had the same speed of my current memory. Cut the cost in half that way plus I'd have no use for the old memory if I had bought the whole 4GB. I was a bit impressed with Crucial's order confirmation email. It has quite a few things they recommend doing to get your machine ready for the new memory. It's sensible maintenance stuff like defragging, running an antivirus/malware, removing unnecessary programs, cleaning up the registry and such. Rather generic instructions but still something you don't see very often. |

Keith, If you have two machines, you can always get the 4 GB and then put 2 GB from the machine you are adding the memory to but I suspect you only have one machine. Is that machine limited to 4 GB or how much memory could you add? It never hurts to have more if you have the slots for it. The next machine I want to get will be an i7 or better.

Good Morning MOT TGIF ... I ordered that Dell so that when I am on the road, I can use TeamViewer to view both my displays on my big machine simultaneously. I will also run HCC on it. Good thing my wife loves me or I would be in soooooo much trouble. Come to think of it, I may be anyway. ... Everyone have a Great Day When I ordered online, it was through IBM and Lenovo. So I don't have any experience with Dell or others. I got two of my machines at Costco but that doesn't allow for modifications. Before that I had gone to Fry's Electronics and I think I may head back there to get the parts I will need to build a machine (thinking of 12 GB and high end i7) and I won't want to use a separate display for it. |

I have a desktop running Vista and a laptop running XP. They use different memory sticks so I can't swap between them. The OS are 32 bit so no point going above the 4GB. |

Before that I had gone to Fry's Electronics and I think I may head back there to get the parts I will need to build a machine (thinking of 12 GB and high end i7) and I won't want to use a separate display for it. I have ordered dozens of machines from Dell online and hundreds of bits from NewEgg.com. When I say bits I mean CPUS, Motherboards, Cases, Power Supplies, memory, video cards, card readers, keyboards, mice...on and on. I really like to deal with NewEgg. Dell ... nosomuch but I do like their laptops and if you are not going to crunch, their Desktops. Their desktops tend to not have enough cooling to crunch a lot and that is what caused me to go to building machines myself. I have bought stuff at Sam's and Bestbuy but it tends to be a little out of date, not customizable, and not quite as cheap. For example, when you get a machine for crunching, you do not need a big disk nor a big video card..just fast MB/CPU/Memory and a reasonably fast disk. Nor do you need a lot of expansion slots or a giant Power supply. Most of my I7s have a 380W Power Supply. Good Saturday Morning (I am cheating it is after noon here) MOT Cool about the email from Crucial Keith. Good for customer and for them(self defense) Congratulations xroule and Gerald EVERYONE have a GREAT day. ![]() |
