Okay, shut down my machines and opened them up. Had a look see at the memory in them. That was a good thing as it also triggered some memories of past discussions about memory. As I recall, it's best to get memory that runs at the same speed as what you have now. If you use memory sticks that run at different speeds (assuming they're compatible with the machine to begin with), you want the faster stick in the memory slot the computer sees first. That's pretty easy to figure out which one it is if you only have one memory stick. The computer will run that memory at its speed until it needs enough memory that it also uses the next, slower memory stick. When that happens, the first stick will run at the slower speed of the next stick. By making sure your machine uses them in that order, you get the most of the higher speed stick. In the reverse order, the slower stick would always be used first so any time the faster stick is used, it would be at the slower speed of the first, which is a waste. I also removed the existing memory from the desktop and put it back in while the machine was down. That let me experience what it would be like putting in a new stick, as in making sure it gets seated correctly. At 25 bucks each for 2GB sticks, I sprung for one for both of my machines. Went with crucial.com as I recognized the name from past posts and because of their guarantee. I should have the new memory by middle of next week.

Good Morning MOT TGIF Congratulations Judson, CCH and stonechild Love those milestones Keithhenry. I don't remember it working like you describe. I thought that all the memory would just run at the slower speed...given what all else you said about compatibility. What I remember is probably specific to one machine but, I just don't know. I have ordered from Crucial before without any issues; hopefully your experience will be as problem free as mine was. I ordered that Dell so that when I am on the road, I can use TeamViewer to view both my displays on my big machine simultaneously. I will also run HCC on it. Good thing my wife loves me or I would be in soooooo much trouble. Come to think of it, I may be anyway. Oh... does anyone know... When I went to IE9, all the little "tooltip" things that used to show up when you hovered over one of the "Standard Smiles" or "Hidden Smiles" quit showing up. I thought I heard somewhere that older versions of IE used the "alt" tag as a tooltip erroneously... is that it. Just curious. Everyone have a Great Day |

Gerald. I got the I5-2430M Quad. They wanted a real preimum to put an I7 in it. It really is a road machine and the crunching is secondary. Still it should contribute some. I had to pay $30 extra to get the bronze color
---------------------------------------- . It was silly I know but I really like that color. |
