Urgent update from Maggie
I am desperately sick and in need of serious prayers. My condition has deteriorated rapidly since the biopsy... I am in constant agony, despite huge doses of morphine, and badly dehydrated from continuous vomiting. I have been fighting hospitalisation, but it now looks inevitable, so you may not hear from me for a while. The biopsy failed... no cells in the sample... so the whole painful procedure will now have to be repeated. |

A biopsy is tantamount to surgery and may not be necessary in some cases.
----------------------------------------I had pain in my back in the flank area. IPV, Sonogram, and CT-scan showed tumors in both kidneys. My urologist sent me for a biopsy, I went thinking that while it probably would hurt a lot I would be up and around in no time. Wrong! I spoke to the radiologist that was scheduled to do the biopsy; he told me that a biopsy was unnecessary as any kidney tumor already detected was going to require surgery and that a biopsy was equivalent to surgery., and why would I put myself through this unnecessary suffering He also told me that doing a biopsy is risky as they may miss the target, and if they hit the target there was a possibility that the biopsy needle would lose cancer cells as it was retracted, which was seeding the cancer and increasing the chance of metastasis. Not to mention the internal bleeding and damage to the kidneys. At that point I cancelled the biopsy and started looking for a new urologist. When I went to MD Anderson Cancer Center for a second opinion they agreed that any kidney tumor was "cancer" and surgery would be required. After two very painful surgeries I was so thankful to that radiologist for sparing me that biopsy that I went to him and personally thanked him. I do not know the specifics of Maggie's case but I feel I know enough to fully understand what she is going through. My prayers go out to Maggie and her son.

Hi RCC Survivor. If you look at previous posts, you we read that it is a pancreatic tumour that encases the portal vein, so it is inoperable.
We havn't heard anything back from Maggie since she came back from having the biopsy done. Thank you for your prayers. |

Latest e-mail from Maggie for those who are not on her mailing list
Hi all Many thanks for your kind messages/ prayers/ positive thoughts. Please forgive me for mass mailing again, rather than replying individually. I was in dire straits last week, and the docs have been tweaking my meds. Since my last email, my morphine dose has been doubled, and an additional anti-emetic thrown into the mix. As a result, the pain is better controlled, I am throwing up less frequently and I have even been able to eat a little. Unfortunately, that level of morphine is having a sedative effect, so I am sleeping far more than I would wish with so little time left. The repeat biopsy is scheduled for this Tuesday, 18th October. Until they get a useable sample, my treatment is on hold and my life is slipping away. I need them to get a bunch of cells from the tumour this time so that they can determine the correct drugs and get my chemotherapy started. Your prayers and warm thoughts do have a noticeable effect, so please, give it everything you've got! Maggi xoxox |

Thank you for the update, GM
I have assured Maggilove that in addition to constantly sending my best thoughts her way I'm crossing my fingers on Tuesday firmly for the cells to be identified so the best possible treatment can be initiated. |
