Re: Looking for survivors to join Team "The survivors"

We were graced with 5 new crunchers last month. 2 of them have already picked up badges.
The latest to get their first badge is breewillhelp, with a Bronze in HCC.
grumpygrampy has picked up a 2nd badge and has Bronze in HCC and HFCC.
We have 3 established crunchers in the group, we would like them to stay a while.
My door mailbox is always open.

I'll be staying. I apologize for not posting more often, but I don't spend that much time on the forums.

Re: Looking for survivors to join Team "The survivors"

We had a discussion recently about BOINC Manager - Preferences, processor usage, Switch between applications every nnnn.nn seconds.
In my humble opinion that setting is useful only if you run more than one project, i.e. WCG, SETI, etc... and affects (however controversial that affect may be) the time between switching projects.
It has nothing to do with how BOINC processes tasks aka work units. In fact, it is not clear that BOINC personnel know how BOINC makes the decision to run work units.
Obviously it is obscure and based on some algorithm unknown to man.
This I can say with certainty, do not set the additional work buffer days above 3 days as BOINC will become confused and will run work units out of sequence and you will most likely miss a lot of due dates.
I did it, I set it to 10 days, it downloaded about 500 work units and BOINC manager could not handle it.
BOINC processed work units due in 7 days (ran at high priority) and ignored work units due today and tomorrow.
My additional work buffer is now set at 0.50-1.00 days and everything works. No kidding, it really works.
Based on the fact that I run WCG only, Switch between applications every nnnn.nn seconds is irrelevant to me and the setting has no affect on processing of work units.
You can't make up this stuff!

gretchch,
Thanks for staying. We are very happy you made that decision.
If you don't visit the forums often that is fine with us; we feel that is a personal choice and whatever you choose is the correct choice.

little mermaid,
Where do you find time to post 3439 times? I find it difficult to post 154 times.
Thanks for the picture and link. That's not a self portrait is it?
