I want to build a computer for BOINC, but I don't know how to start. BOINC will be the only thing it will run in its lifetime. What architecture should I look for? Should it be focused on CPU or GPU?
My main requirement is best performance/watt. Second requirement is hardware cost. |

First thing: What is your maximum budget, and what Projects do you want to crunch?

Hi
This may help to answer somequestions Depending on what you would like to crunch on the GPU dictates ati or nvidia .No need for sound cards or the large hard drives and ssd saving money for a larger psu and maybe 2 or more graphic cards. |

Take a look at this page: http://www.totalgeekdom.com/?p=572
I suggest something different than TylerChris post. Unless you plan to participate on other BOINC projects, right now for WCG there's no use for GPUs. Maybe in a near future, but right now your best bet is to invest in the best CPU, which I believe is the Intel i7-2600K. You can build your PC without a discrete graphics card and save a lot of your budget for now, and add a powerful GPU later when WCG supports them. |

It's 2500 USD. I have a empathy for hcmd2, but it could be any, why? For HCMD2, you don't need a semarate graphics card, as WCG still does not support GPU crunching. For 2500 USD, you should be able to afford 3 computers, each with an Intel i7-2600(K), a motherboard based on Z68 chipset, 8 GB of RAM, an efficient power supply and a small hard disk. You can use built-in graphics to setup the PCs. Go for Linux 64-bit, e.g. Ubuntu. Regards, Martin ![]() |

Regards, Martin +1 Although, don't exaggerate the amount of watts of psu if this is the setup you're planning to build. Pick a psu from a trusted manufacturer like Corsair, Seasonic or Enermax. Then choose any >300W psu. The 2600K seems to require about 250 watts when OC'd.

The o.ps. oprigional post is to build a computer for Boinc not as I understand it purely for WCG.
This covers a wide range of projects they may be interested in. Both cpu and gpu would need to be considered. At the moment they have not provided enough information. But I feel the basics may be A good high airflow case such as fractal design Arc midi tower or for more money Silverstone ft02 As said a good branded psu of at least 750w Chris. |

Throughout BOINC-land, and even here at WCG, start small and expand only if finances allow; thus, there is no point aiming for performance-per-machine, not yet anyway. That leaves spreading performance on many optimum-cost machines, meaning the most bang for your buck, and that can only be AMD-64bit-Linux. Add GPU later, if desired (and again, only if finances allow). This scheme should get you started without burning a hole in your pocket, and without over-committing to an arrangement which may be difficult to maintain (electricity cost, hardware maintenance cost, etc).

Think I'm getting around 35K WCG Points per day from an i7-2600K on Ubuntu. Forget what the speed is though (and don't want to go to the BIOS to find out).
More like 25K per day on Win x64 for an i7-2600 at 3.6GHz. |
