How can I turn off network problem warning? [resolved]

I use a laptop to crunch, so I sometimes lose network connections. The problem is that boinc (WCG) complains about about the lose connections repeatly and it is very annoying. I don't mind the little pop from windows, but the one from boinc (WCG) is too annoying.

You have to click on it, then go to the transfer page and restart the uploads/downloads, which cause the pop-up to appear again telling you there is a network problem when it has been resolve already. Sometimes it appears multiple times before things are fully resolve, and when it appears, you can't do anything with boinc (WCG) until you click on it.

Any ideas on how to turn it off? or make it tell notify us only once?

I think you can close the Boinc Manager but let the apps run. By default when you close the manager you close all apps, but you can change that during the setup procedure, so run Boinc setup again. Pity that is not easier.

Re: How can I turn off network problem warning?

anhhai,

There's a discussion over on Berkeley dev. forum about a network connection slider in the ''Options'' screen of BOINC Manager, which you can set to zero, so you wont get reminded with the pop-up. Can't see it in the new 6.12 "display and Network options..." screen, though in the latest wiki update under Tools menu, it is mentioned. See: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Advanced_view

It would then appear under Notices I guess. It used to be a irritation where multiple of these reminders would stack up on the screen and block computing at that.

Let us know which client version you're on [the usual ;-]. Then we may be able to dig more specific to that release and maybe write a short FAQ... it's been ''pop-ing'' up again in the latest 6.13 dev. discussions.

edit: inserted discussion link

edit2: In that Options screen there's also a box where you can select if you want the BOINC Manager exit screen to show when closing the BM which brings up the Pop-Up window if you wish to close the science apps [core client] too, but don't think it's your issue.

Re: How can I turn off network problem warning?

This may not be a solution to your problem, but you could just suspend network activity in Boinc Manager while you are using the machine for other computing and re-activate network activity when you are done. Of course, any results transmission will be suspended until you re - enable network access. This does not interfere with the crunching of jobs and it will stop those annoying pop up windows.

Cheers

Re: How can I turn off network problem warning?

skgiven, good idea, I will try that. btw it is easy to do, you just have enable manager exist dialog under Advance->options.

Sekerob, I am using 6.10.58, I can upgrade if need be. The warning message doesn't seem to stack up. Another one may only appear if you close the current one, but it is still annoying as hell. It tells you there is a problem, you resolve the problem, you click OK and another appears. Then you click OK again and make sure everything is uploaded, and another warning appears.

Sgt Joe, that is not a very good option for me. I have tried that before and forget to re-enable it.

Re: How can I turn off network problem warning?

anhhai,

Run Network by schedule [I do often] or revert to an earlier client where hitting the ''Update'' button would open up a line for 5 minutes. Most sciences easily fetch and report in that time-frame **.

Specifically are you talking about the "connecting to client" which is an internal issue or the network pop-up when its needed. Sometimes I had that when there was work to report nearing deadline, crunching off-line. It said literally said something like "Need Network Connection" or something similar.

Irritatingly, network absence continues to cause tasks to bomb, even in latest versions. Unresponsiveness of computer, mouse jittery or freezing for longer is a sign on the wall.

--//--

edit: Everything has a price, but for laptops not having GPU crunch capability it is likely a non-issue. 6.2.28 still has that "Update, Open Line" feature.

...you just have enable manager exist dialog under Advance->options.
Something else that has moved within Berkeley's latest.
Now you have to go to Tools, Display and network options... and choose Enable Manager Exit Dialogue, before File, Exit Boinc, and deselecting Stop running science applications when exiting the manager. raised eyebrow

It's like looking for a CD and eventually finding it in the wrong case.

Anyway, did you get anywhere?

annai:

For your BOINC_v6.10.58, have you tried: Advanced > Options > General (tab), and at the "Network reminder interval" slider, slide the arrow to "0" (leftmost part of the slider) ?

Re: How can I turn off network problem warning?

andzgrid,

Mentioned that in my first post [no confirmation it was looked at], but it does not seem to exist in all versions, certainly not in 6.12, where it's a Notices reminder with a drop-down list with various fixed period selections.

But a thought sprung up: Under the web profile and local preferences screen there is a box asking to "confirm before connecting to the internet". Untick that box if it is. Also I'd set "Network Always Available" if not done already and see if that changes anything.
