Re: I want to build a computer for BOINC

Do we have any hint as to whether WCG is more likely to go with Nvidia or AMD for its first GPU science? I vaguely remember hearing OpenCL, so maybe both?

kateiacy, nobody responded to this answer [of July 26] and maybe you found it in the meantime... both platforms will be supported... no favoritisms for a CPU/GPU brand and word is that you'll be able to do this on a 6.10 client, though it would not directly recognize the OpenCL, which ability wont appear until 6.14 or 7.0x.

Also, OpenCL supposedly will work with the Sandy Bridge Intel GPU's and possibly future chips as well. (Though this is currently a BOINC software issue that doesn't detect the Intel chips) So, this brings all 3 of the major players to the table instead of the top two.

Re: I want to build a computer for BOINC

The problem with the box being naked is dust.

As for fans and cooling. Cooling cpus down these days is fairly cheap if you get a fan meant for overclocking gaming rigs. Even liquid cooling setups these days are easy to install and just require a kit that has a lifetime of five years for the whole unit. No replacing the water or having to add coolant.

As for noise you can buy fans even some standard fans are very quiet. Apevia fans are incredibly quiet.

Plus it also depends upon the case design. Some cases are better airflow designed with the multiple fans so you never have noise. Even putting your ears up to the fans when the system is running full blast you cannot hear anything.

Like I said some companies you can order custom built pcs from offer options to reduce noise by either using fans and baffles that don't have vibration, to putting in sound dampening materals and gaskets around the psu.

cyberpowerpc.com has intel and amd configuration schemes. If you have an operating system disc you can use you can knock some price off the system. You got lots off options to select from. Even lan and business pcs are offered in the configuration schemes as well as graphic workstations.

Re: I want to build a computer for BOINC

My experience has been much cleaner systems since putting many of them "naked". They don't retain the dust anywhere near as bad. cyberpowerpc.com in the past were not cheap compared to do it yourself builds. Maybe I need to look at them again. Then again, the sound dampening (extra cost features) aren't typically something I'm concerned with for a build. I just don't put it in a room that needs quiet.

Re: I want to build a computer for BOINC

Well when they have sales and rebates it can be hundreds of bucks or nearly the same price as buying all the parts and putting it together. You have to factor in the freebies they toss such as sometimes they offer a 80 dollar networking card for free. Plus if you mess up putting it together and cause something to go bad you are SOL but buying it from them means they are fault if they mess up add in a three year warranty. They will even send you replacement parts in guess something is bad when you get it.
They are offering 200 dollar rebates on several motherboards that retail wise cost close to 300 dollars and these motherboards are considered excellent ones to boot and were just released this year.

But even without professional wiring selected it's done very neatly too neatly in fact according to the IT professional who I had look at mine. Mine the back fan if it goes bad you gotta remove the motherboard to detach it from the power supply. But no tangles of wires and everything has lots of space to easily pull and upgrade.
So I am very pleased with what I ordered. Like I said mine with everything including the freebies was equal to the retail price plus shipping of everything individually.
