... you can install a newer version over an older without even bothering to stop the client. The installer will do that and retain all your running/cached tasks. ... @SekeRob: This works for all *nix clients? I've done that on Windows and Mac, haven't tried it yet on my Linux boxen.I've done it using Synaptic / .deb packages on Ubuntu going from 6.10.17 to 6.10.58 to 6.10.59. Works fine. Don't know about running the .sh kits, but have rarely, if ever heard a moan. --//-- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 11, 2011 8:15:18 AM] |

I'll make sure to backup the whole BOINC directory just in case an oops moment happens when I try the new install version over the older. |

Unplug from the internet prior to updating, to prevent adverse server-client contact counter incrementing. Results will just be wiped from your backup if you restore the data_dir afterwards and the client happened to connect to the servers prior to that. When happy, plug internet cable back in.

Had earlier moved from 6.12.26 to 6.12.28 after being advised to do so. 6.12.28 supposedly just fixed a few bugs in 6.12.26. Was beta testing for 2 other projects and running a full mix of tasks from various projects. On top of the FireFox freezes and C++ side-by-side errors I came across system freezes, saw the CPU usage wind all the way down to about 25% and apps that kept running when Boinc was closed (configured properly). Turns out none of this was to do with the Betas, some was to do with other projects and much was to do with 6.12.x.
Gone back to 6.10.60 for now, and the foreseeable future. While 6.12.x does offer more, especially for troubleshooting, it comes with too many problems of its own. |

Just some hours ago started testing 6.12.33 alpha, upgrading from 6.12.30 alpha. Did it the "no any precaution" way in the middle of CEP2+CW tasks, former just running few minutes after laster checkpoint. Ran installer as admin [the right click on exe in file explorer], Protected App Execution selected and NOT choosing Allow All Users. Been fine and the just updated BOINCTasks 1.07 connected without hassle and picking up the latest notices [some project having a new factorial prime of 500k digits]
No news, good news, will let it run 24/7 while ''using'' the computer to see if things break or start bothering me. --//-- PS, knreed, not seen a single notice from WCG for weeks and never a notice for a seriously failing task [there were none, my feet resting on wooden desk ;o] |

I said I wouldn't but I had additional motivation. My clean install of 6.12.33 seems much better. Just a few very minor glitches with the interface.

If talking about e.g. all grayed out options on Systray icon... did you close the properties screen of the task before that?
Why message tab had to be renamed to Event log while moved to the advanced menu is beyond me. Now we have to ascertain what the version of client is or keep repeating lines like "message/event log" to catch old and new layout while providing support. --//-- |

Over at the Berkeley BOINC forum several parallel threads on 6.12 were locked and a new one started to conveniently summarize the version changes from 6.12.26 through 6.12.33. See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=6639&nowrap=true#38504 . Still don't see this to be Thé golden RC release making it to the final, but for sure 6.12.26 is not production fit as a release that will work for everyone.

But, I do agree we sometimes want the most awkward scenarios of action sequences, and not all can be reasonably met. I put one foot on me other then tried to walk off with the other and fell ... less drastic than jumping the roof :D --//-- |

Yeah, that quirk.
Another one, open the event log*, then open the properties of a task, now try to look in the event log again... and yes, really stupid rename, now too close to Windows event logs, opened with Windows event viewer. It was also relocated in the drop down menu, and the Tasks sub-categories (Project, Progress, Status, Elapsed...) were rearranged... Sort of like opening the door to find someone else tidied up your tool-shed. |
