Re: BOINC 6.12.27

Been running 6.12.26 (x64) for 24 hours on a new home built system with no problems so far. OS - Windows 7 x64, RAM - 8 GB DDR3, CPU - AMD Phenom II X4 840 running all cores at 50% just keep heat and fan noise down. This is one of 5 devices in the same room.

Re: BOINC 6.12.27

My new machine has an identical configuration - been running it for 14 days now with no problems. I run at 100% but no doubt I'll have to trim that back come yuletide when the weather heats up...one of 10 devices in the same room. Only two operating though due to electricity costs...

BSD "AMD Phenom II X4 840 running all cores at 50% just keep heat and fan noise down. This is one of 5 devices in the same room".
If you're running other systems at 50% I suggest you switch 2 off and run 3 at 100% - more work for less electric!

I dig that. Any more hikes and I'll have to further reduce system count; annually it's well over a £K for me, and that's on an off peak plan.
No more system freezes so far - I expect the 13deg C peak temp drop has something to do with that.

Re: BOINC 6.12.27

Yeah, Yeah, Right, Right, "6.12.26 works for me", but then alpha 6.12.30 is out for Windows... no sorry, for Linux it's already 6.12.31 alpha and more bugs being resolved as we speak, Charlie found an fix to a multiple issues causing bug for Mac, so expect 6.12.32 soonish.

Not surprising WCG is maintaining a save distance and certainly not telling the large contributing partners and colleges.

rflcptr, you do good in loading 6.10.58, code/security audited and all by IBM.

@rflcptr : Yeah, now wasn't that a worthwhile change?

(I've won awards for sarcasm...)

I'd like to do that, but I need to replace the noisy stock CPU fan on the AMD 840's. My computer cases don't have top vents so I'm looking for East/West versus North/South flow orientation so the heat exhaust is in line to go out the back towards the case fan. Plus, the Antec EA-500D 80Plus EarthWatts power supply has a single fan (exhaust) which according to specs "80 mm low noise cooling fan" is suppose to be low noise. I guess my hearing is excellent and I can hear a pin drop, cause the low noise is noisy to me. In my dreams I'd rather have all passive cooling, but summer heat and humidity won't have it. silly

Reads like it's a national sport in Australia ;>)

And sure enough 6.12.32 is out.. go grab and test, if you dare ;P. Where rflcptr had trouble to find the second major interface change in addition to the Notices view [RSS driven], some had trouble reopening the event log Window once it was opened. Not started testing it yet. Waiting on the current CEP2 to checkpoint, in a few hours :D

Re: BOINC 6.12.27

BOINC is naturally moving aggressively to advance the platform. That is their job.

World Community Grid's job is to maintain a stable and secure platform volunteers and for running research.

As a result, we update our recommended version of the software client infrequently and only when there are features that are needed to support the research projects that we are running.

The 6.10.58 client has undergone a security audit and had been found to be stable. We are not aware of any features in 6.12 that we require at this time. As such, we are not going to be updating our client at this time.

This does not imply any official comment on the stability and security of the latest version of the client from BOINC. It is simply a statement that we will inherently have an older version of the platform than the latest and greatest from BOINC.

There is no requirement for volunteers at World Community Grid to upgrade to the new version. Additionally, we intend to remain compatible with the newest version of the software client if you choose to upgrade.
