@ fosking
----------------------------------------Running only GFAM makes things easier to explain. ![]() ![]() Work units are loaded into BOINC with a quorum size of 1. This means that 1 replica is created and it will only take 1 successfully run result in order for validation to be attempted on the result. However, there are a few checks in place: 1) The server maintains a value that serves to inform us of how 'reliable' a given computer is. When a result is assigned to the computer for a work unit with a quorum of 1, then the reliable measurement is checked to make sure that the computer is sufficiently reliable. If it is, then all is good. If it isn't, then the work unit is changed to have a min_quorum of two and a second copy is sent. 2) When validation is attempted, the value for the host is checked again. If the value has fallen below the required level, then the result is marked PENDING VERIFICATION and another result is sent. 3) Additionally, during validation, there is a certain random chance that the result will be flagged to be checked again. Any result picked in this case will be marked Fast / Reliable clients are determined by the following: The recent average of the length of time between when a result is assigned and the time that the result is reported as done by the client. This time must be less than 48 hours on average. This measurement includes the impact of queue size because a larger queue size will lengthen the 'turnaround time' for a task and push the computer out of the 'reliable' metric. The host must have maximum daily quota, as at March 7, 2012 that's 120 per day, per active thread. Errors/Invalids reduce this quota value No messages are presently send to hosts to confirm their reliability state. The "In and "Out" is automatic. No device status page reflects the rating. Known/regularly contributing hosts must have had "last" 5 returned results validated "at science app level". A new science or an error/invalid requires renewed proofing for that science. Since March 6, 2012 when WCG servers were upgraded to BOINC version 700. Full host reliability requires a continuous series of: A) Last 5 (five) checked results as valid. [Zero redundant sciences require >= 20 (twenty) consecutive validation to be allowed to run them alone.] B) An average return time of less than or equal to 2 days (48 hours) C) A maximum quota permission at time of any work assignment (120 per device core as at March 6, 2012) Somewhere in there is the explanation why you've had non-qorum 1 WUs for GFAM which end up Pending Validation. ![]() |

Trying to guesstimate the time remaining for GFAM new work send out is difficult when it appears WUs are not being sent out in sequential order! A short extract of WU's received since midnight:
----------------------------------------Rec'd # 00:56:05 112730 08:29:56 112039 14:19:15 113009 With this uncertainty in mind I calculate that there maybe as little as 37 hours worth of new work ramaining to be sent out! |

Just in case anyone hasn't yet seen it (linked from Facebook):
----------------------------------------News Update (May 28th 2013) One interesting part of it: We're happy to announce that a new project from the Ontario Cancer Institute is in the works! Stay tuned for the reveal of the project name and description later this summer! There are several other projects in the pipeline, so rest assured that you will still be able to contribute to important research. ![]() |

The WCG Big Reveal has been published!
----------------------------------------![]() Full details Synopsis:
The only "new" news is that the next project will be Cancer based. Being cynical I suspect the news release will be treated as manna from heaven by the masses but I'm disappointed that there isn't more substance. ![]() |

Couple of things,
1 - Thanks for the stats jonnieb-uk, very cool. 2 - A new project is awesome, and also awesome as cancer as that's my job, cancer research. As its an Ontario Cancer Institute project as was HCC I think its a good assumption that it will be another GPU project. 3 - I don't think I've seen an update with no Personal Milestone or PBs in. Sad. 4 - I had the same thing with GFAM that fosking had with 2 copy WUs, never really thought about it much at the time. But I know why ![]() 5 - Gold for HPF2, plus ~40 RT days in PV and in progress. Just have to hope the flow continues for another 5-6 days to help me hit 180. |

Fantastic news about a new project in the next few months! Fingers crossed it's another GPU project as Maugan has said. I've yet to stretch the legs on my graphics cards fully.

Fantastic news about a new project in the next few months! Fingers crossed it's another GPU project as Maugan has said. I've yet to stretch the legs on my graphics cards fully. jhindo's post last week said that the next project wouldn't be GPU capable from day 1 but hopefully GPU crunching will follow somewhere down the line. |

Great to hear of more projects from Ontario Cancer Institute.
----------------------------------------All other aspects were a total disappointment. I wonder if this is part of the reason (Never seen as many zeros)? http://boincstats.com/en/stats/15/user/list/0/0/5410#49 |
