Re: UK

Am thinking the much cheaper option would be to build my own single-CPU tower, using a non-Xeon CPU, and then rely more on the GPUs to do the work (an option which seems to be working very nicely for Soong).

A single 3770K at 4.6Ghz with two 7970's, that should get a few points a day, I'd say - priced under £2k (including VAT, with the GPUs), that's a much cheaper option than a pre-built Xeon server:

Total: £1,880.07
Would need to look into whether a debian Linux based system could run the graphics cards properly under BOINC. If not, I'd probably use my Windows 7 Home Premium subscription (from my gaming PC) on the above machine, and upgrade my gaming PC to Pro/Ultimate, which would add to the cost slightly...

(Assuming your thinking of building this sooner rather than later), HCC GPU has only a limited time left (even if it is extended, but currently only about 50 days or so), and now MAC GPU has finally gone live, that time will drop still further, it's your decision, but I would hold off on such an expense until the techies announce another GPU project or you could end up with a very expensive machine that only produces the same amount of time as a standard I7 PC.

Re: UK

Some restarts are little more than an involuntary twitch. Whilst others. e.g. Maugan, make a substantial contribution to both the UK team and to WCG. I'll develop the format above into an ad hoc report to monitor progress. wink

I do what I can. biggrin and I have noticed I will be over taking you in the team rankings soon jonnieb-uk so I hope you won't start ignoring me in the updates wink

I was also really thinking about getting a 7950 card to boost results, but given there is only one project with GPU support and it could end in the 50days (so say themoonscrescent) I really can not justify buying that card which would go completely unused once the HCC GPU workunits dry up.

On the other hand, I might get a AMD FX-83XX 8 'core' machine for less than <400. I like the price point of the CPU+other bits and I would just be using it for crunching so raw performance isn't so much of a factor for me. Just something I can set up with linux and leave running in the corner of the room plugged into my router.

No worries. I just report the stats without fear or favour. biggrin

This time last year I was around #10 in terms of current crunching: This year I'm around #18. If a new member or restart is outcrunching me then its good for the team. smile

Thanks, I hadn't thought of checking the amount of time left on HCC. I wasn't considering buying it for a while, yet - probably a few months or so, so I'd have noticed the end of the project, but thanks for the reminder! smile

I know the techs have mentioned the possibility of further GPU-based projects, but I guess it's a case of waiting and seeing...

Re: UK

Morning Team smile

HCC GPU currently at 80.66% (updated yesterday), it was at just over 75% when I announced that I hit 10 years on the 10th March, so approx 5% in 11 days = about another 43 days left (not sure what impact MAC GPU will have, the next update will give an indication to that).

The Techies have said that there will most likely be an extension to it, but they have not said how much of one or confirmed that there definitely will be one, but on the other hand, @Thargor, you could always use this time between GPU projects to save up the £3000+ needed for the better Server biggrin

Re: UK

Only just realised that one of my cats has very kindly knocked my dongle out of position, I ran out of GPU early this morning and the servers aren't giving me any more... On my most productive GPU machine crying crying crying

I love my cats, but sometimes Cat Burger sounds very very nice sad
