It's nice to be #2 for Points, but once HCC is over and done with, I'm under no illusions that Crooks will fly past me and retake that position, but it's nice while it lasts

The automated reporting is set to only report "birthdays" if a member is active but I make an exception in this case, since as noted above, crunching has resumed *:
----------------------------------------Yesterday marked: 8 years crunching for the UK team for The Candlers * and I needed a post to bump the thread. |

Good Evening and congratulations to everyone for helping UK in reaching #60 team results ranking.
----------------------------------------![]() Just switched to 100% HCC crunching (both CPU and GPU) and hopefully will be able to exceed 10 million points, 25 thousand results and 5 years runtime for project before it completes (currently 9,226,262 points 22,782 results 4:134:20:14:16 runtime), and make further progress up the Global Points and Results rankings. Not looking forward to GPU becoming inactive, as points, run time and results will drop significantly ![]() ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Ian_UK at Mar 25, 2013 10:10:06 PM] |

Great crunchers think a like, Ian_UK. But I have slightly less modest targets before HCC ends. If I'm really really lucky I might hit 2 years, but I just want to make sure I get the 105RT days remaining for me to get to 1 year. I think everyone's points, RT, and results will take a massive hit when HCC-GPU is done. I'm a little under 3 months from hitting my first global 5,000 rank but I think it will take many months more with just CPU crunch on.
----------------------------------------And question. When people give details on a prediction on how many days remaining, where do you look? [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 25, 2013 11:03:21 PM] |

Re: Share your opinions and help shape the future of World Community Grid Wow - we received over 15,000 completed member surveys! That equates to about 200 days of time people spent answering our questions - we are so appreciative of our dedicated volunteers! Right now we are in the process of identifying focus groups to allow us to go into greater detail about the survey findings. We will be randomly selecting people, from those who indicated they wanted to participate, to ask them to be a part of a focus group. Even though we aren't even halfway through the process of analyzing the user study results, we consider the number of responses we received a huge success. Thank you so much for doing your part to help make World Community Grid better for everyone. Stay tuned for more updates! ErikaT |

@ Maugan
----------------------------------------I'm a little under 3 months from hitting my first global 5,000 rank Care to share how you calculated this? I have you at 244 days (Results) but I'm willing to consider I might be wrong! ![]() |

I should add that I assume the person at the bottom of the 5,000 rank does very little work between now and then (but as they are in the top 5,000 that's probably a bad assumption). If it really is 244 days then its probably because your counting the results the last few in the 5,000 do and I'm not paying too much attention to that as I'm not tracking it.
----------------------------------------I like my estimate better any way, 90 days sounds better to me and when I check my estimate keeps dropping ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 25, 2013 11:39:49 PM] |

Still on the subject of spec'ing up a new server, does anyone have any info on the crunching-comparison between Intel and AMD CPUs?
----------------------------------------I know Intel CPUs tend to have hyperthreading, so you can double the number of cores to get the number of concurrent WUs you're able to run. However, AMDs tend to have more natural cores. So, as a comparison, how would an 6-core hyperthreaded Xeon compare against a 12-core AMD, assuming similar core-speeds? I'm going to scour the internet for GFlops ratings for a handful of CPUs I've been looking at, so I'll likely find my own answers to this, but thought I'd get other peoples' opinions at the same time... ![]() |
