Re: UK

There's a chance that "server-colocation" is going to get properly defined as a "staff-benefit" product in work, leaving people to choose whether to go with a virtual machine on a VMWare platform that we build for everyone to share, or whether to go (or stay) with a 1U physical server.

The latter would be much more preferable for WCG, but I'm going to wait a bit to see how things pan out, before deciding to splash out on upgrading my current 1U physical server.

If it does work out, I'll be going from an ancient/slow 2GB dual single-core Xeon, to a "slightly" newer and more powerful 12GB dual hex-core Xeon. That might do a little bit more work, I think! :)

Re: UK

TeAm AnandTech have been an on/off threat to the UK team's Points ranking for some time. At 31 Dec they were within 3 days of passing us! Then we put on a spurt/they went quiet and they didn't register as a valid threat in the last 6 weeks. Now they've strung together 7 days crunching in excess of the UK team's effort and currently are set to overtake us within the next 6 days. sad

Great stuff - I'm still pushing for a couple of VMs on our test cluster for trying out some new toolsets we are lookign at. As we are probably only goign to be using them for 10% of the time, it would be a shame to waste those spare cycles... very much depends on when I can get some runtime for my projects and how much share of resources I can get.

Re: UK

(apologies to any GPs on here... it's just typical of my own experience too)
Not a GP but spent sometime managing a six partner GP practice. As with any profession there are good ones - those who go a bit further - and bad ones - those who just go through the motions. My personal judgement would be for a GP <40 - so their knowledge of the latest developments is still relatively uptodate. Despite the requirement for Continuing Professional Education I suspect that many GPs rely on their experience rather than keeping abreast of the latest changes to treatment, drugs etc.
I think mine is more going through the motions rather than bad. My wife's experiences have been more positive in general... I suppose I just have a specific gripe about a couple of bad experiences - and as I rarely go to the doctor, these have outweighed the positive ones.
