I found this topic looking for "gpu" in WCG forums...
Please move on! |

Here is a thread talking about the HCC GPU OpenCL program: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...ad,31217_offset,20#326833 Hi Seroph4x, Currently there are no GPU-enabled projects on WCG. We are trying to enable HCC using OpenCL. A search using GPU will bring up lots of threads on this. There are a number of BOINC projects not on WCG that use GPUs. For example, look at GPUGrid and MilkyWay@Home. Folding@Home is a non-BOINC GPU project. Lawrence Is there a progress report on the status of enable HCC using OpenCL? http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...ad,31479_offset,10#332082 So, is anyone prepared to update us on the progression of using a GPU for HCC (or any other project for that matter)? My guess is that HCC-GPU (or whatever its going to be called) will not turn up until some time after the present HCC project has finished, which makes sense, but I would still like to know that we are really on for a GPU project (no serious problems in the app). TIA |

It [a GPU version of HCC1] will come and it will be before HCC1 finishes. That's all you'll get to hear from me :D

Well, my question is... Will there be separate runtimes for GPU years contributed? Currently badges and stats say X amount of runtime which are based on CPU years. Will GPU's be tallied in with those or will they be different?

Hopefully different. Check out Primegrid for an example of the fiasco of combining them.

Also of note -- OpenCL is not nearly as efficient as CUDA coding. This means that CPU will outperform GPU in all but a few specific tasks.

Yeah, but Primegrid badges are based on points rather then runtime. WCG also takes pride in how many CPU years a project has accomplished. This would need changed too since it would begin to include GPU years.

Don't count on a separate badge for mixed projects [running on CPU and GPU]. FAICR the GPU uses the CPU to keep time and time is likely to be recorded as 1 GPU card day = 1 CPU Day. Points/Credits is a separate matter. There's no information or indication how WCG plans to handle that, how that GPU time unit e.g. 10x more work is performed if that generates 10x more points. In the ''Aqua" thread' [chat room], knreed made a post about what he's doing presently to integrate the ''new'' Berkeley credit system. I'd venture to think WCG will work not to deviate from that system and integrate the WCG specials he mentions.

Fantastic news.
Both CPU time and GPU time is recorded; a necessity as GPU tasks sometimes only use a very small amount of the CPU - how would Boinc otherwise work out how long a GPU task takes? I hope WCG moves away from runtime badges and onto credit based badges (shader count, GPU count, core count - all too grey), but not my decision, and we may be looking at something new altogether. Anyway, and more to the point, we are going to get a GPU project, and reasonably soon ![]() If anything I would expect WCG to help progress the Boinc credit system and overcome it's frailties. The very best of luck with such a strong and positive move |

To clarify the CPU time definition: Been running a QCN task for 4 months, low CPU resource as a 3rd active task on a duo laptop, but it is recording 24 hours wallclock (elapsed) when it's not. Both CPU and elapsed is send to the servers since GPU enabling took place in the client, so can be utilized to add to the time driven badge portion.
Frankly, don't know how this works on a client where CPU use is suspended and GPU is not. That configuration does seem to exist and being operated. --//-- |
