You are about #1500 in line for this. In the meantime, you can choose to load WCG and let your CPU crunch away while you are waiting. Is there anything that we can do to speed up the process? I mean the WCG would jump light years ahead with GPU support...its a real pity that we cant build folding farms based on GPU's on WCG. |

You can crunch at Folding@home, GPUGrid or MilkyWay.

Or Primegrid, Collatz, and I believe SETI Beta. I'm not sure if regular SETI does ATI yet.

Hello GunStinger,
Is there anything that we can do to speed up the process? I mean the WCG would jump light years ahead with GPU support...its a real pity that we cant build folding farms based on GPU's on WCG. We are really trying to run a GPU version of HCC this year. Obviously, we are not going to promise that we can do it before we have at least a Beta version up and running, but I really believe that we will do it this year. Once we have a successful track record in GPUs, it will encourage project scientists applying to run on WCG to develop GPU versions. Lawrence |

Lawrence,
----------------------------------------Is there really still a point to create a GPU version of HCC that won't be release for another few months since HCC will be finished by the end of the year? Or is this more of an experiment to see if you can do it? Will this version also work for HCC2? ![]() |

----------------------------------------You can crunch at Folding@home, GPUGrid or MilkyWay. GPUGrid is Nvidia-only while Milkyway demands double-precision, so depending on card it's possible neither of these projects is possible to run. Also, with Nvidia intentionally crippling double-precision on their Fermi-cards, Milkyway isn't the best fit for these types of cards. As for Folding@home, FAH for short, for starters being non-BOINC puts them on a disadvantage, but if you've got a Nvidia-card FAH can still be a good alternative. With FAH's older Brooke-application for Ati-cards, the performance was mediocre while needed a large fraction of a cpu-core, and this coupled with the bonus-point-system of FAH often meant using Ati to crunch on gave little or no benefit, and could actually give less points/day than to run only SMP-client instead... As for FAH's new OpenCL-application, I've not tested it yet, so won't comment on this except to say FAH demands atleast a 5xxx-serie of cards, and that support for the older Brooke-application is being dropped so 4xxx and earlier cards will likely be useless on FAH before the end of the year. Coleslaw said: Or Primegrid, Collatz, and I believe SETI Beta. I'm not sure if regular SETI does ATI yet. For SETI@home it's just to manually download & install Ati-applications for both SETI_enhanced and Astropulse. For anyone with Nvidia-cards, Einstein@home will also be an alternative. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might." |

Hello anhhai,
Is there really still a point to create a GPU version of HCC that won't be release for another few months since HCC will be finished by the end of the year? Or is this more of an experiment to see if you can do it? Will this version also work for HCC2? I am sure that the HCC project scientists believe that creating a GPU application will be useful for them. They may be thinking of using a non-WCG version in the future. Since they are not posting much right now, we can only speculate. We need to run a GPU project to give potential projects some hard figures while they are deciding whether or not to code a GPU application. This can be a massive job. Are GPUs really worth it? In some cases - yes. But it is not automatically a good idea. All this is just my private non-official guessing. Lawrence |

For what GPUs will be this HCC app? AMD / nVidia / OpenCL ..?

Hello petnek,
It is coded in OpenCL. More specific detail will only come with a Beta. Which is not in sight yet. Lawrence |
