082 sorters, and the great new 029 card punches I remember those keypunch machines. We got upgraded to the 129's at one point but kept an old 026 because it could punch something (I do not remember what) that the 129's could not. The 129's were at the tail end of the keypunch era. About a year later we got a contraption which keyed directly to a 9 track tape which was a lot quieter. ![]() Cheers Technology may be obsolete hours after it's invented these days but it takes forever for it to die. Back in '74, I worked for a short time at a place still using an old IBM 1401 (a glorified card sorter) and briefly knew how to "program" a card punch. ![]() |

It's getting quite close, and interesting, as newtod and pramodp both close in on their first MOT million. We have us a "horse race" it seems. Even better, they'll both end up winning!

After we did seventeen of these series, we were able to load the deck of 512 cards to load the operating system. Then we could input stuff with everyone's card decks and output the info to more cards. this was in 1984! we finally replaced that base level computer system (which ran personnel, payroll, supply, everything) in 1985 and kissed the cards goodbye. the irony is that i joined the air force to work with the latest technology and ended up working with something just a little younger than ENIAC. I remember when I used an abacus! Just kidding but started and finished a degree in chemical engineering 79-84! I remember using card then we had towards end a programable computer at computer center. I spent several hours programing in a class project which then went blank! I went back to cards and swore off computer till bought my first desk top in 1993. Kina been hooked since. Still incredibly frustrating to me, but it must be the machonistic engineer in me that keeps me coming back. Thought we would have a record for points today but seems we all have individual great days out of sync but see us hitting them soon. Run time record has stood way to long. Everyone is really contributing which is great! New members are always nice but is really great that we have the members we do have. Good night!

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You guys were right the last and best was the 129. It could punch and run as a "verifier". Before that was the 026 and a separate machine .... pehaps an 027 that was a purpose built verifier. My wife used those to support us while I went to the Universtity. I think I could still set up a card for the drum for those machines (ensuring numeric, alpha, both or blank). I might still be able to wire those reproducer boards as well and set up the brushes for the sorter. I took a class that taught all that. "Punched Card Data Processing". I bet I still have the text around here somewhere. And for those that remember: //sysin DD * datacards /* ![]() Everyone have a great day. ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by RT at May 5, 2011 4:10:08 PM] |
