keith-dtk. That discussion of the time value of money and peace of mind is always tricky; especially if you are entering retirement. My wife is one of those people that want the "piece of mind". When we retired, she talked me out of a couple of decisions. And, it was a good thing that I listened; had I not, I would be "listening" a lot more ![]() Yes, it's tricky because the answer differs for everyone. I have a wicked practical streak that can drive folks crazy so I've come to focus more on cash flow than maximizing returns and such. Having enough coming in on a regular basis to at least match what's going out has a lot going for it. Many years ago, we paid off all our debt and then started saving up for a down payment. When we bought our house, we put 20 percent down. I was fortunate to get a mortgage that didn't require us to escrow for taxes and insurance. I do that anyway, just on my own. I also do anything else that isn't paid monthly. Eliminating those big fluctuations from month to month in cash flow does wonders! I'm working on getting up to having cash on hand to cover 24 months of all expenses but still have a ways to go. Getting the house paid off before I retire is a big goal too. For me, the last thing you want in retirement is a mortgage payment. One of the few good things about the big recession is that a lot of folks have learned the importance of saving. I hear what you are saying. I have had my house paid off for some time and I have been retired for over a year. Come April 15, I will be 68 young years old. All I have to do is keep all those in my family in check as to what they spend. However, they come back saying I am spending too much on the house. Of course I can always get back to them by saying I am increasing its value and I am eliminating or reducing some of our monthly expenses. As to what is happening on Wall Street, etc., a lot of things are becoming cheaper but I have to keep an eye on what I have to make sure I sell (and buy) at the right time. Hey, it's your home and you're going to be spending the rest of your life there. Some remodelling so that you can really enjoy all those years to come is totally justified for that reason alone. If the house ends up worth more, that's icing on the cake. Retirement's supposed to be a time to relax and enjoy life. You did your time at the grindstone! ![]() |

Thanks RT and Chris and anyone else I may have overlooked. Your responses were very helpful. By the way Chris, PG&E has a minimum amount they charge and I don't know how that will all work when I provide electricity to them.

You did your time at the grindstone! ![]() I agree with this 100% I built a new house so we could live like we want. I gave my kids both great educations and help them financially now and then but told them that my plan is to spend my last dime on my deathbed. (Of course that will not happen but I want them to know that they need to make it on their own and plan for the education of their children and their own retirement -- not to rely on me after my death) |

Great job team! dr. Mike was changing jobs and health issues(?), first part for sure. I had posted a while back reaching out to him but no response, hopefully it is because he is working hard at a new job! Wife kicked a box pulled the plug on power supply, that disabled Franky for couple hours so numbers should be up tomorrow. Amazing with these super short work units must feel like it did back in the beginning. As I have never experienced such short work units before. Lots in PV as I am sure all doing HCC so numbers should go up even more as we reach equalibrium. Any news about Japan last I heard it looked like cement was burning from reactor containment and that huge Russian transport plain was lifting a huge pump from Alanta to take to floodnthat reactor. Hopefully not to late. Yes I will stick with medicine as do not know the finer details of pump or plain!!!

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I know Japan is suffering terribly. Really sad. If I lived in the Pacific Northwest, I would move to high ground now. I can't imagine what would happen to Northern California, Oregon, Washington State and Vancouver Island and surrounding areas with a Tsunami. There is so much development right on the water (in some cases literally); and it is so beautiful. I suppose Seattle is somewhat protected but still, there is so much right on the sound as there is in San Francisco / Oakland. It sure is a beautiful area; it is easy to understand why so many people choose to live there. In other news, my long awaited MB, which should have arrived yesterday will likely make it today so I can get my main computer solid as opposed to crippled on this BioStar MB. A BioStar tech suggested that I replace the CPU and test it. I told them sure... I keep a spare I7/2600K around just to test Motherboards. ![]() Everyone have a GREAT day ![]() |

Thanks RT and Chris and anyone else I may have overlooked. Your responses were very helpful. By the way Chris, PG&E has a minimum amount they charge and I don't know how that will all work when I provide electricity to them. I'm not sure how that's going to work with PG&E. With Edison, I am no longer considered a residential customer, since I am producing power. In fact, when I call them and press "1" for residential support, they transfer me as soon as I give them my account number. I don't have my bill in front of me right now, but I believe I am part of the Net Energy Metering (NEM) service now. This will be the first month that I'll have a credit, so I'm curious to see how this is going to work.

I wish I could do something similar, but that sort of thing is not available in Texas. I wonder where the financing for this thing actually comes from; You don't suppose that it is all coming from that company or PG&E or Edison? Hey Keith... How did you get through the storms without damage? ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by RT at Apr 12, 2011 2:43:10 PM] |
