Re: HCC with GPU

The HD 7750 looks like a good option for people with lesser PSU's; it won't need any extra power cables as it's only 75W (max). For crunching I would expect the quoted 55W to be correct for most projects and I doubt if any would go over 65W. In terms of value for money it also looks reasonable, but don't expect the performance of these cards to be immediately met by project apps; they may need to be honed.

If I am reading the specs on AMD's web site correctly, this is a double-precision OpenCL 1.2-capable card. I am so glad to see that AMD has put out a lower-cost, lower-power-consumption card with these capabilities. It should be able to crunch any app for ATI or OpenCL (just won't be a speed demon).

Re: HCC with GPU

I have one system now with AMD 5830 and nvidia gtx460 both crunching boinc. Install was easy. First install amd pci-ex16 #1 slot and install amd drivers and reboot, then shut down and install Nvidia to pci-e x16 #2 slot and install drivers for nvidia and reboot. Then just add cc_config.xml and add this in the cc_config.xml file:
<cc_config>
<options>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

Now Boinc uses both gpus, but you need to go projects your profile page and set project to crunch amd and nvidia tasks or different projects to each card. You can crunch even two different projects at the same time with just one gpu if you tweak projects both to receive 0.5 of the gpu.

I never had any issues with amd and nvidia crunching in the same rig. Had gtx 460 with 6870,5830,6970 and gts250 with amd 4850,5830.

Gpus will generate alot of heat, but just one gpu crunching won't add much to cpu or vrm temps, but two will :)

My 6970 crunching adds 5 C to cpu temps vs gpu @idle and two 6970 crunching adds +10 C to cpu temps vs gpu@idle. Gpus with stock fans, but case is corsair t600se with two bitfenix pro 200mm fans+gentle typhoon 1850 and Corsair H100 with 2xgentle typhoon 1850s. All fans runs @full rpms.

Re: HCC with GPU

While double precision is an excellent addition to the 7750 and 7770 (absent in previous x700 generations), it's only 1/16th the performance of single precision, so functionality at projects such as MilkyWay would be quite poor, but at least the cards should be usable there.
Anyone wanting a good dp card should look at the 7900's or wait until next month for the 7800's which should at least offer more than 1/16th (6%) performance. I recently read that GF600's won't arrive until April, but that dp ability should increase relative to the performance of GF400/GF500 (1/8th to 1/4 sp IIRC).

Re: HCC with GPU

@skgiven: I have one question regarding the link you posted: Who cares about FPS if you're gonna use it for crunching data? Not to mention, the normal human eye/brain combo can't pick up much difference beyond 65 fps anyway. So what's the point of that link in regards to crunching for WCG here? Just curious. Not trying to start any issues here, only looking for discussion on how it pertains to what's done here in WCG.

Re: HCC with GPU

Personally I do care about FPS because I choose my Video card for general use.
I do use my computer for other things besides WCG.
High FPS is a good indicator of how well the GPU will perform in high-end games run at high settings.
If a card is capable of high frame rates it will probably be able to stay above 60 FPS even at very
graphically intense parts of games

Re: HCC with GPU

Hi Folks,

Does anyone know if the HCC GPU projects are available yet?

Re: HCC with GPU

The ''dropping'' into production is multiple weeks preceded by an extended Beta, so is expected. Subscribe to RSS feed of the Beta Test Announcement Forum. All available RSS feeds are summarized here: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/rsssummary ... just a short click in your browser to see new items [in bold].

BTW, nothing by anyone to vote on a GPU forum. It was approved and IS on the build *plan* to come in the Support section of forums LIHTTG, when the time is there and not before [and we can argue till blue in the face why before is better] ... but even the best laid plans get broken. Things approved have never made it either ;D
