It's not backward at all. GPU processing has different limitations to CPU processing and a given application may or may not be suitable for GPU implementation. GPUs are not just universally better at everything. There's also the consideration that what we're doing may very well at some point be injected into someone's body, so screwing up the implementation by rushing it into production is NOT an option, no matter how many people may have cold GPUs waiting to run. This needs to be done RIGHT, not fast. How would you like it if we found out after contributing so many thousand years of GPU time (which won't take all that long, maybe a year or so of calendar time) that the results are useless because the application was rushed into production to placate people? That's all the wear and tear on the hardware, all the data sent and received and all the power consumed both by the volunteers AND the project servers, USELESS. Not a great thought, is it. As I said, this needs to be done RIGHT, not fast.
----------------------------------------My comment, particularly the term "tantrums", is not at all out of line with the manner some people have chosen to express themselves over this issue. There has been everything from obvious sulking to threats of withdrawal from the project because they didn't get their GPU client "right now". If people don't like being called childish and their behaviour referred to as tantrums then they should consider how they are behaving, stop being so damn precious and grow up. 1 Corinthians 13:11 should ring a bell here. ![]() Currently being moderated under false pretences |

I like how some let's say very smart crunchers show themselves as very wise persons blame not very smart crunchers because they discuss topic and ask questions

Responses like this and demands for status updates are precisely why they don't give predictions. One admin was kind enough to give an impression of a time frame this time. He will surely not make the mistake of communicating again and I wouldn't blame him at all. Are you suggesting that because I'm requesting they keep the channel of communication open that my request itself would be the very reason they won't? ![]() |

This thread is now way off topic and would be better closed!

I dont have question about the time schedule for the GPU crunching .. But I have one other questions : Is there any info about the single or double precision card support?
----------------------------------------I would like to purchase new card and if the double precision card has better usage for crunching I plan to buy it :-) ![]() |

All I can say on the GPU topic: Have patience. Everyone will know what to buy/use once it's released. Besides, new NVIDIA cards are scheduled for an early April release, around time Ivy Bridge I think. Possibly the 8th?

I'm not sure what message rilian is trying to convey to the rest of us WCG crunchers with the use of a very large graphic in the rilian [Feb 3, 2012 9:11:30 PM] post. Also, there is no text written in that post to explain not only what the graphic is, but more importantly, what the connection of the said graphic is to any of the earlier discussions in this thread.

I would like to purchase new card and if the double precision card has better usage for crunching I plan to buy it :-) you can get a double-precision one, and while we wait for HCC-GPU, you can crunch GPUGRID or Folding@home with it AND remember that a double precision card, while more expensive, WILL work for non double presision work! So if you MUST buy a new card NOW but a double precision one and you can be sure it will work, if possible just wait until they release the specs needed to crunch! The only other problem will be whether to get an AMD card or an Nvidia card, projects are usually optimized for one or the other but not both! Again WAITING is best!!! ALL the people that should know have been told NOT to tell us, but from what they are NOT saying it is fairly clear WCG IS working on it!! To release it before it is ready would be suicide, there are too many other gpu projects out there they would be competing with and they need our support to justify what they are doing! They will release it when it is ready, not one minute before, and certainly not one minute later either!! They have ALSO said that it WILL be released to the Beta folks FIRST, so go into your settings and allow the Beta stuff to come thru to your pc's so you can be among the first to see them. Beta work is sent in a random fashion to those who have signed up for it, so not all those who have signed up will get some Beta work, unless they have lots to go around. BUT if you DON'T sign up, you WON'T get any!! ![]() ![]() |
