Re: HCC with GPU

Well after a few days letting my meager GPUs (an 8600GT and a G100) run PrimeGrid, I'm returning DOUBLE the BOINC credit from them than I am from all my CPUs combined. While those points are amusing, it's not the kind of work I really want to do and those cards are nowhere near good enough for the likes of GPUgrid, so I'm hoping when the HCC GPU tasks land they're light on resources.
Of course we'll get what we're given ... but I'm hoping.

Speaking of BOINC credit, I will pass MrKermit in BOINC credit before the week in out!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Yes gpu's give amazing credits but they also do amazing amounts of work too! A cpu is a single/dual/quad/6/8 core processor while the newer gpu's have 1000 or more little processors on them. IF a project can figure out how to harness those things the amount of work done will be orders of magnitude above what it is being done by the cpu's! Due to the gpu's I have, and the VERY long time I have been crunching in general, my total Boinc credits are: 614,957,457, while yesterday I received 2,797,743 credits. I have 13 machines crunching here at home, all except my laptop have gpu's that crunch too!

I hope this GPU will work with the HCC GPU application:

AMD AMD Radeon HD 6x00 series (Turks) (1024MB) driver: 1.4.1646

as I got this message from milky way @ home:

I also hope this will work with HCC:

AMD ATI Radeon HD 2300/2400/3200 (RV610) (256MB) driver: 1.4.1016

You can use your 6x00 GPU at POEM right now!

The RV610, I'm afraid, may only be useful with math projects.

Re: HCC with GPU

Thank you, GTCola2010:

I have tried to do so, but cannot make the application run: I do not understand the instructions. I would dearly like to run this application which was a favourite of mine up to a few months ago when I changed my project mix to all WCG projects for simplicity. I need to learn more, and soon.

Thanks again!

Re: HCC with GPU

Don't worry about testing the application as instructed in the POEM News section. Just update your BOINC version from 6.12.34 to 7.0.2 or higher, tick "Use ATI GPU" in POEM preferences and download some work. I prefer BOINC version 7.0.2 as later versions have very wonky work fetch unsuited to my unreliable internet connection. Probably better to untick "Use CPU" at this stage too, lest CreditNew again rewards you with 6-7 credits for 2 hours of CPU processing.

This early version is inefficient and will probably only give a low GPU load percentage in default configuration. No adjustable parameters that can be used to increase efficiency have been provided. The application is throttled by insufficient CPU polling, so GPU load % varies according to GPU model and speed. The higher the core speed and the more stream processors of a GPU model the lower the GPU load % when running one task. It can vary with different Catalyst driver versions too and of course as gamers would know CPU bound applications running on a GPU benefit from a faster CPU speed.

If you want to contribute more, see the POEM message boards for instructions on how to run multiple tasks concurrently with an app_info.xml file. Your Turks class GPU may only need to run 2 or 3 concurrent tasks to achieve current maximum achievable efficiency. Single task GPU load is 39% on my HD 5870 so I run 4 concurrent tasks and the GPU load is 74%. I can get it up to 78% running 6 concurrent tasks but the extra CPU load interferes too much with my WCG crunching. I already begrudge the 2 CPU cores I am leaving free to support GPU processing. OpenCL GPU applications are often like that unfortunately, OpenCL development is at an early stage and it may be more sparing of CPU resources in a few years.

BOINC 7.0.2 and above are beta versions so may cause invalid results on some projects. 7.0.2 works OK for me here on World Community Grid however. You can't go back to a 6.xx.xx BOINC version without probably losing any work in progress/in your cache, so beware.

Hi, kashie:

You have made my day! Thank you very much. I will follow your instructions in a couple of hours once my current six tasks are completed.

Thanks, again!

You are welcome. Good luck.

Catalyst driver version can make a big difference on POEM GPU.

I've just updated from Catalyst 11.4 to 12.1a Preview. GPU load has increased from 74% to 88% and Runtime for 4 concurrent tasks has reduced from 70 minutes to 38 minutes. CreditNew will probably grant me the same or less credit per day but at least I will be doing almost twice as much POEM work.

I also just discovered that BOINC 7.0.2 may download new work if you click Update even if you have suspended some tasks, so be aware of that.

The problem with this POEM GPU application is that as well as the CPU/GPU polling mismatch it is also using some CPU as well shown as System in Task Manager. So it means that the application is most efficient in terms of work completed per watt when no CPU tasks at all are run. I am badge hunting here and running a core of theSkyNet as well, but otherwise the most efficient option for this box would be to run POEM GPU alone. Applications such as this do not encourage sharing with other projects.

Re: HCC with GPU

Thanks for those instructions, kashie! Those are the best instructions for Poem-GPU I've seen yet.

I just want to say to anyone thinking about the Poem-GPU (or OpenCL, as it's called) is that it's very easy to run once you update BOINC and Catalyst. (I'm barely computer literate and I got it to work!) The hard part, if you so choose, is the core/load tweaking.

I wonder if HCC-GPU, when it comes, will be similar in terms of CPU-GPU matching.
