Did a brief search and the one major distro that as yet has not had a negative mention is the mother of all xUbuntu's... Debian. Funny enough, it's also the Debian compiled BOINC 6.10.58 package from (GetDeb **) that I'm running on my stock quad. RAM speed stock too... all stock in fact.

FWIW I'm using the Dotsck/UX version on AMD quads and have not had any problems. WUs run from 5.5-8.5 hours and the cpu time and elapsed time always vary by about 12-22 minutes depending on how long the WUs run. The few I have checked have all been in the 93% efficiency range.

I use Kubuntu 10.04 x64.
----------------------------------------Run times varied between 8.70h and 4.57h So far: 61 Valid, 8 PV, 3 IP 8 Errors - On two occasions 3 tasks failed at the same time; probably due to me not closing Boinc correctly after an update and doing a restart. CPU usage to runtime ratio always over 90% Q6600, 4GB DDR2, 1xGTX260-216, using 3 CPU cores for WCG (1 free for the GPU). CPU usage constantly at 100%. With no GPU running, the ratio is over 95%. I would suggest you try the x64 version; as it works for me and is faster anyway. [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Oct 15, 2010 1:34:13 PM] |

just give a ubuntu vm box a shot:
cpu time 7.5 hours, progress 51% -> "suspending computation, cpu usage too high" -> restoring from "last" checkpoint at 0 hours 7 minutes :(( and i had LAMS selected, well, hum... luckily, i just had just created a vm memory restore point and could start over at 49%, but i really doubt if this is going to exit in a valid result. |

I seem to be running 15 to 30 minutes behind clock time on the cpu time very evenly (spread is due to total length of WU) on both Ubuntu 9.04 (Ubuntu repo version of Boinc) and on Debian testing running added 2.6.35 kernel and Boinc 6.10.52.
Need to get 58 but too busy doing things like the kernel implant. Had no trouble with the 2.6.32 kernel that this Debian is supposed to run either, same results. Seeing how this usually works out to 5 or less minutes per WU it does not bother me in the least. |

herna, Boinc Manager, Advanced Preferences, Processor Usage, "While Processor Usage is less than", set this to Zero (0).
----------------------------------------slade52, that is about right; a loss of up to 30min is not too bad. It is partially due to system overhead and partially your usage. Other projects are similar (not all, but some both here and outside WCG). [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Oct 16, 2010 12:52:23 AM] |

skgiven, first of all, thanks, always glad for each reply :)
well, i turned "while processor less than" to 0, but it restarted again at the last return point, which means this time a 80% task progress and 10 hours lose. after all, i'm crunching now for 1.5 days on the same units duo. at first, i thought reactivating the virtual machine from energy saving black screen would cause the cpu panic state, so i turned off each of the vm's and the host os' energy saving preferences, however, they once more started all over. point is, i don't understand these issues: (1) 'leave application in mem while suspended' does't work: suspend always drops to the last checkpoint (which means from almost zero) (2) 'while processor usage is less than' 99/100/0 (i have tried all 3 of these values) each caused messages 'suspended, cpu usage too high' and most of it all (3) there are no checkpoints... is it because i'm using a virtual machine? a couple of months ago, just when cep2 started, i had some units crunched on a native ubuntu system without problems. |

Using a virtual machine might be the source of your problems. For a start the memory is limited.

One nastiness of pairing of a normal with a time loosing result is that you get this:
