Re: Poor crunching on this project

I'm using the kernel that gets installed by 10.04, which is 2.6.32.25.

See if you can find a download that uses kernel 2.6.32-24-generic or lower, and do a clean install. Do not accept updates as this may change the kernel. My very small results above appears to have addressed this issue, and I am eagerly waiting to see if a larger sample proves or disproves this current theory.

What Yose-ue stated above may have found the problem:

The linux kernel is effecting the efficiency when running CEP2 jobs at least on my system.
I have a choice of two linux kernels when I boot my system.
when I boot with linux kernel 2.6.32-25-generic I have only 26% efficiency when crunching CEP2 jobs.
when I boot with linux kernel 2.6.32-24-generic I have about 94% efficiency.

with the older kernel at least it is practical to run CEP2 jobs it is not as efficient as most other types of jobs which are over 99% efficient (when not using the computer for other things).

Re: Poor crunching on this project

From reading a review of 2.6.36 and 2.6.37 there were "issues".

http://www.h-online.com/open/features/What-s-...-6-36-1103009.html?page=1

ATM (past 24 hours) I'm running with swappiness=0 to minimize disk IO and maximize the RAM use, which with 2.9GB free and 1.4GB used by BOINC on the quad is richly sufficient.

I'm still on kernel 2.6.32.25 build 45, with GNOME interface. Graphics is set at normal. Set it to advanced and things could go somewhat turdy.

Re: Poor crunching on this project

I do think we are onto something here. I am running 2.6.32-24 with Ubunto release 10.10. I was already there from a previous install of earlier Ubunto release. I didn't do a clean install. I have network suspended and have just made it past job 2 (I think, based on the time) without having CPU time drop back to a low value. It may be too soon to celebrate, but it is encouraging. I running 8 jobs 1 CEP2 and the rest C4CW. I am going to try starting more CEP wu concurrently. If they are okay, I will try reactivating the network (I have to eventually).
Will report back.

Re: Poor crunching on this project

This all sounds strange to me. 2.6.35 is working great for me.

Could be the version I am using. Running on Debian testing with the Liquorix kernel.

Re: Poor crunching on this project

I'm still on kernel 2.6.32.25

Same here. I have Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit, and have done all the updates as they came in. Computers are (a) Core 2 Duo P8700 with 4 gb RAM and (b) dual core Atom D525 with 2 gb RAM. I try not to run more than 1 CEP2 WU at a time, but sometimes more than one will start while I'm away at work.

Except for the recent episode when Internet access problems caused repeated resets of CEP2 jobs on both machines, I've had pretty consistent performance. Final CPU times are 30 - 40 minutes less than elapsed time (more only if I'm using the machines for other things).

So the kernel 2.6.32.25 isn't always associated with CEP2 resets. Maybe that arises only with more high-powered machines than mine.

I'm sticking with Ubuntu 10.04 and BOINC 6.10.17 for the time being, as they are working well for me for crunching and the other things I use the machines for.

Re: Poor crunching on this project

My only current linux cruncher has Debian 2.6.26-2-686 and it doesn't seem to have any issues. Boinc v6.2.14. OS and Boinc are 32-bit. PC is a P4 3.0GHz (HT-on) with 2GB RAM.

Re: Poor crunching on this project

I certainly don't recommend changing anything if you're not having issues. However, my CEP2 wus were setting the CPU time waaaay back after job 2 such that the total CPU time was underestimated by a couple hours. Running with the 2.6.32-24 kernel has completely solved this problem and I am thrilled.
Thanks Yose!!!
Just to emphasize- other kernels do work in other computers, just not the one that I was having trouble with.

Re: Poor crunching on this project

I setup a Boinc Usage Schedule, to avoid running during peak power cost times. Unfortunately all the CEP WU's fail when this starts, so may be a configuration to avoid.
Kubuntu x64 10.04, Boinc 6.10.58, default settings other than the scheduler, including leave apps in memory while suspended. Boinc manager was closed at the time, system was in use for some of the time. I will try suspending to drive in a day or two.

Re: Poor crunching on this project

Glad it works on other systems also.

Looks like a beta just started.

Re: Poor crunching on this project

Bottom line: If you have large gap in wall clock versus CPU time, perform a clean install with a kernel 2.6.32-24-generic or lower and DO NOT UPDATE the clean install. Otherwise, just crunch on!! The additional CEP2 WU's I recently crunched now has wall clock versus CPU clock about where it was before this situation reared itself.

Now supply of CEP2 will now be limited per this new thread http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,30161
Just my luck!

Thank you yose-ue for your assistance and helping to finding a solution.
