I think the scientists were sandbagging it...you know, from the flooding caused by the cat 5 hurricane? Sorry, I'm tired.

nah, not really. I was expecting this to happen. We got type As about 5 or 6 weeks ago, which generated type Bs a few weeks ago, so now we are getting type Cs. (1 A = 2 B, 1 B = 250-300 C). This is only the tip of the iceberg, we should be getting a couple of millions more.
----------------------------------------Once all of the type B are converted to C and processed, then we may have another dry spell. Generating the As are the hard part for them. ![]() |

Hi
Getting a little problem with the cache during this flood. Have a three day cache set when checking it ,found in reality the work downloaded was around 6 days. This is happening due to changing completion times, crunching the pxx units the time is around 4 hours but after crunching a few sxx units the time falls to just over an hour for all WUs and new work is requested over a couple of days this has made quite an impact on work downloaded. So maybe those that have set caches to the more upper limits are going to struggle to get the work back on time. Hope this makes some sort of sense Chris Using 6.10.43 |

That makes complete sense, I snagged a few Type B WU's a few days ago, then a load of type C WU's came flooding down to my machines.
I had 57 pages of DDDT2 WU's, I'm now down to 30 pages of in progress WU's on 2 quad core machines. I set a 5 day cache on both machines for DDDT2, then put the cache back to 0.5 days on both machines once I had a load of WU's. The windows box is going to struggle to get them in on time and has randomly started processing WU's due later than WU's due earlier. My Linux box has decided to download 10 CEP2 and 30 HCC WU's along with a massive backlog of DDDT2 WU's to be done. It seems the processing time of p*** and s*** type C WU's messes up things. |

The first batches of type-C WUs had the same estimated weight which was not enough for the p** and too much for the s**. If your client started with a bunch of s** WUs they have lowered the estimated time for the p** ones even more and that could result in loading more WUs than necessary.
----------------------------------------That's unfortunate, but for clients with a reasonable cache size the effect was less dramatic and also it could stop earlier as correctly estimated WUs (see below) could be processed sooner. These estimates have been corrected on later batches where the p** and the s** had different estimates which were also closer to reality. The type-B were also underestimated if I remember correctly, but the probability to receive many of them was much lower. |

After a couple of days, back to the familiar "No work available..." messages. <fx>shrugs</fx> The weight for this project is set to 1 as explained by uplinger, to prevent hoovering. This works such that only few tasks are in the shared memory at any one time, so if the client gets bounced, it will try again in a little. I've set my client back to a 4 way science mix and got still 1 regular 10 daydeadline DDDT2 in the past 24 hours, so those only having DDDT2 should be getting supply to keep the cores busy, certainly with at least 300,000 in the pipe if the statistics are reflective of what's been returned versus the probably 500,000 or so from this torrent, in 3 build sessions.

After a couple of days, back to the familiar "No work available..." messages. <fx>shrugs</fx> Not here. I still get my reported units replaced by fresh dengue drops. |

----------------------------------------Still. I am not "hoovering", I have no work queue sitting waiting, there are many BOINC projects that I run, if the powers that be elect not to make stuff available here, my cores crunch someone elses. As before, <fx>shrugs</fx>. [Edit 1 times, last edit by adrianxw at Aug 17, 2010 9:22:46 AM] |
