Re: Birdwatchers from the World United

I just got back from a little vacation on the east coast, Cape May, New Jersey. In the 5 days we saw 101 different species of birds. Had a real fun time!!

Re: Birdwatchers from the World United

There were a few Ruby-throated in Cape May, but I have not seen any this year in Minnesota.

Re: Birdwatchers from the World United

Update on bluebirds. I had to start using the camera on my phone because they were getting too close to the lens of the other camera.

There were eventually 5 eggs and I think 5 hatched, but I couldn't get a good look.
Anyway, there are now 4 babies. They are around 6 days old.

Re: Birdwatchers from the World United

I forgot all about this thread.

Very nice picture. The pileated woodpecker is a spectacular bird. I had a pair hanging around last winter. They are definitely a sight to behold.

Here's one you (usually) don't see every day, either. This was taken yesterday morning around 11 AM. The temperature was approximately 25F.

It's a Rufous Hummingbird in North Carolina, in December. It's been here since some time in early September.

The green tinge on the feeder is from a floodlight pointed at the feeder to keep the sugar water from freezing. So far it has worked down to around 15F.

I'm really hoping he makes it through the winter.

Re: Birdwatchers from the World United

I hope that little hummer survives. He is very far off course. We never see Rufous hummers here in MN and I suspect they are even more rare on the east coast. Keep him warm.

Here is an article about an owl hit by a car in St. Paul and out world famous Raptor Center run by the U of M. There is a video at the bottom.

Hummer: I'll be keeping the light on for the hummer whenever it's going to be below freezing.

Owl: It always makes me a little sad to see things like that. Hopefully it will be able to fly again.
