Re: Birdwatchers from the World United

WOW I am impressed! Yes, unless you are in a photo contest you really should be. You are a true natural talent!

A sidenote: do these flamingos walk freely in Chile?

The mating dance of the Andean flamingo (Phoenicopterus andinus). These guys are puttering around an extremely caustic salt lake in Chile, high on the Altiplano in the Andes mountains in South America.

Re: Birdwatchers from the World United

Jean Pierre your thread reminded me of a wonderful experience I had on new year of 2006/2007 were I was in Mauritius Island.
I stayed nearly for half a day with a very coloured bird typical of the island that nests very high in the trees. I shot hundreds of pictures and kept maybe about a dozen. It was very difficult (tiring) to shoot because I had no special equipment but a Nikon DX2 with a VR 80-400 mm zoom. I shot pictures at 400mm with no stand just with free arms. Sometimes I was laying on my back on the ground. Those who know this equipment know it is heavy. The lens is excellent but heavy. It has a VR feature that I used. Expo correction were on the fly. To make things difficult there was a lot of wind, you can imagine that nothing was keeping steady. The three pictures here are JPEG direct from RAW original with no correction. With photoshop you can improve a bit but I prefer to show them untouched. Enjoy:

Nests high in the trees:

Zoom 80mm
F/10
Speed 1/250
Expo corr -0.3IL
Iso 200

The colourful bird:

Zoom 400mm
F/10
Speed 1/250
-0.3 IL
Iso 200

The Bird leaving the nest by falling downwards. (Nests have entrance at the bottom):

Zoom 400mm
F/7.6
Speed 1/640
-0.7 IL
Iso 200

Re: Birdwatchers from the World United

Yes great photos! You should really start a JP's photos thread.
Wow, freely walking flamingos, here in Sweden we don't have such big or beautiful birds, but we do have Swan, Crane and a lot of small birds. I can post some pictures soon as I will have some time during Easter soon.

Sorry, no polar bears walking freely in Sweden :)
