I would really prefer no badges - none at all; for anything!
That way people would be treated as equals in the forums. Either that or an infinite scalar points/project system; rather than the existing no-fun, semi-relevant squash box token badge system. You muppets, |

I for one would prefer to see one similar to PrimeGrids. You put your mouse over the badge and it tells you their total contribution to that project rather then just the minimum to get the badge. This would let people with Sapphire badges show how many years over they have already accomplished until WCG decides to create new badges and would also show just how close you are to getting the next one.

That way people would be treated as equals in the forums That way WCG will mimic real life where everybody is treated the same as equals in status, money and recognition. LOL and members who finish one WU will get the same thanks as the member who completed 12,064 WU yesterday. Thank goodness that is not the way it works. Each member deserves the be recognized for their contribution, big or small. |

Astrolab, I'm sure your condescending tone is purely unintentional but that is the way your messages about this topic are coming across. My tone is not one of being condescending. I have never disrespected any member as a function of what they contribute to this project. My tone is actually one of disbelief at the suggestion that crunchers be given a reward for finishing one DDDT2 WU that lasts maybe .34 hours. All I suggest is that they hang around for another 13.66 days to EARN a badge. Isn't anyone willing to actually work for some acknowledgement? Are people so shallow that they think they need a biscuit for donating 21 minutes of CPU time towards a project that consumed 160,774,888 minutes of CPU time yesterday. As I'm sure you are aware, there are many projects where it was not possible for the majority of people to get 14 days, African Climate anyone?. For AC@H you needed to crunch one day of WU and yes not everyone got a badge because you had to meet a MINIMUM commitment. Part of the reason that you only had to crunch for one day was the lesser number of WU available. Plus, DDDT2 is already twice as large as AC@H ever was and it is not even 1% complete.Surely you can offer them that much goodwill. They always have my goodwill for whatever they crunch, but they need to EARN the Bronze badge by the COMMITMENT they make to WCG.You don't get a medal at the able-bodied Olympics just for showing up. I think, that badges in WCG serve two purposes: to be something fun, and to encourage more contribution.
After reading some comments I think we are drifting away from both. I find the idea of the "white" badge brilliant. That badge would not be a "reward", just some form of certificate of participation. To astrolab's comment: and members who finish one WU will get the same thanks as the member who completed 12,064 WU yesterday My answer is No, not the "same thanks". This special badge (be it white or whatever other color or even shape) would be clearly different that the rest of the badges. Everyone would identify them as what they represent. Think of this, for every mega-badge collector we see in the forums, there are thousands of people that can't donate even 14 days, but together are doing a lot of work, and this special recognition can lead them to do more. I don't know how the "My Grid" page looks like on someone with no badges, but probably very dull and not encouraging at all. A simple 28x28px image CAN make a difference. But, if all this issue about badges makes us argue so much, maybe skgiven's comment of no badges at all would be better. |

Think of this, for every mega-badge collector we see in the forums, there are thousands of people that can't donate even 14 days, but together are doing a lot of work, and this special recognition can lead them to do more. So why do you feel you need to make excuses for someone who can't donate 14 days? I believe that it is more common that they won't take the time or make the effort. You are making, what I believe is, an invalid assumption that crunchers join WCG to earn badges. If a person is not willing/able to donate 14 days for a bronze badge, then why try to motivate them with a clear badge for .36 hours? There is a team member who has not returned a WU in over 5 years but has done 2 WU for 6 hours. Pardon my indignation, but give me a break. A Badge? I have a hard time even saying thanks. A new C2D computer running 9 hours a day takes less than 3 weeks to get a bronze and that is not a monumental task for someone who only has access to a single computer. You can't give WCG 3 weeks? It has taken 3 weeks just to validate this last batch of DDDT2 WU. Fourteen days is just not that big an investment to ask for in the future of the humanity. Signing off on this thread. |

If you get one task or one million, you participated, so you should be recognised. You could even argue that you should get a badge for selecting to run a project, even if you did not get any tasks; it’s not your fault the server decided not to give you a task, or enough tasks to get a badge. How would you feel if you volunteered to do some charity work, and someone said, “Not you, you not tall enough”? Another way to look at it is that those people that stopped crunching other tasks, in order to get a badge prevented you from getting the badge, by sucking up all the WU’s. The WCG advertises itself as being inclusive, but does not go too far out of its way to include people.
