That would be the BoI (Badge of Ignorance).
Actually, I'm not really in favour of that. While the idea is good, it would ruin my smily-face system that I envision in a colour background system based on RGB with all possible mixes. Orange can be half BoD and half BoL, yellow could be fully BoL and so on. Because it does not agree with my plans, I sadly have to dismiss the idea. Wait wait wait... There still is lighter and darker. So Yes, we can work that in too! |

So the there will be no badge trimming,
----------------------------------------and the future is set in stones, and self-printable paper certificates. What sort of game are you playing at? [Edit 1 times, last edit by skgiven at Apr 13, 2010 8:05:41 AM] |

No badge trimming: I honestly have no idea
Future set in stones: I wouldn't say that self-printable: Hmmm, nice idea but not original. What game: the same guessing game as anyone else here in the thread. This is supposed that the three remarks and one question were pointed to me. If not, then feel free to ignore the above |

I was stating the situation, and joking about it. It was not aimed at you. It wasn't particularly funny.

and a Badge of Avoidance for crunchers who download Boinc but crunch projects other than WCG.

That's why we want everyone to do a clean install of version 6.2.28, so that part is automated... being attached to WCG :>)
----------------------------------------Maybe May/June we get the officially endorsed 6.10, with WCG skin of course [skin can be downloaded separately... see FAQ's].

Make it dirt colored (what could be a less precious metal) or whatever. Probably white would work well. Attention with white or whitish color. The 5 year badge should logically be Diamond if we follow the precious gemstone lineage. That color may be used then. Regarding the the ONE WU returned ---> ONE Badge issue, I consider that we must reward the effort that a cruncher does. I know it is difficult to measure and what is the minimum effort level required. Today the criteria is 14 days CPU runtime. We know that this can be attained in a day for some powerful multisocket machines dedicated to WCG, but can take weeks for CPU idle time crunching on a laptop. But I understand the frustration of some who do not have the means but to contribute in screen-saver mode for little time per day on one unique device. They are at great risk to miss the first badge of a project if the project time is short, and thisis even more true if they crunch in a default mode that is all projects without particular preference. But we still must reward these contributors. We want to promote background, transparent multiple project crunching on CPU idle time, to attract the highest possible number of crunchers. My proposal here is as follows: When a project is finished, the crunchers who have crunched that project but missed the bronze badge by less than one week runtime, then they get the bronze badge. This logic would apply only for the bronze badge to allow those crunchers to have a visible trace of their participation on their badge board. |

Seriously, while I understand your point, it invites other questions.
What about those who are 1 day short of sapphire? Do you allow that 1 day? Or a fixed percentage? Because those crunchers will complain too. How about crunching 1 week on purpose and knowing you will get the Bronze at some point in time? Nah, then better a certificate system with total crunched time on WCG, or use of that sig I noticed somewhere on the boards with detailed info per project. |

Hi all,
----------------------------------------I am a newbie cruncher and I am not really going after badges as I selected all projects and just crunch the tasks as they arrive. Given that I don't select tasks for a aprticular project and that I crunch with a lowly 1.7 GHz Pentium M in a laptop, it is going to take me ages to get my first badge and I guess many crunchers are in the same situation. It might therefore be a good idea to introduce a new badge based on total run time. It could be a square with no symbol using the usual colours (bronze for 14 days total run time, silver for 45 days total run time, gold for 90 days total run time, etc...). That could be a form of 'reward' for people who crunch for all projects and/or have an antic and slow computer and that would require more effort than just returning a single work unit. Heavy crunchers who already have a collection of badges would get it by default and new starters with shockingly slow computers could still aim for a realistic goal. This might have been suggested before but I did not find anything within this thread or after a quick search on the forum. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 13, 2010 4:01:58 PM] |

Hi Ptitordi,
----------------------------------------The beauty of the shockingly slow antique computer is that accumulates CPU time per core at the same pace as a horribly fast one i.e. 365 days at 24/7 is still 8 silver badges in a year, more than there are active projects. It's why WCG chose a very low entry point, originally just a single badge that was later redyed to bronze, for 14 days. From statistics we know how long first arrivals stay at least and that period is good for bronze on all sciences there are presently running. Given you are an all-mix cruncher, they'll come in time and once the first one does you could help it a bit by de-selecting that science and so on until all slots filled, then return to all-mix again, or else just leave it to faith. I'm doing presently just that until the next level appears for any badge. Needing 922 days to upgrade the present active projects one step up. As for an overall badge, a 1 WU badge, points badge and whatever more badges, I'll pass on opining on that. Happy crunching, [maybe the crunching itch will get another hitch with you too, no cures available]
