I'll jump in and increment the interest counter for this. If I remember correctly, the first badges had a white (clear) background. That would be be perfect for this "participation" level if runtime > 0. That would be good for the old crunchers who crunched (but not enough crunches) before there were badges and color levels. It would throw a bone to those trying to get enough time on DDDT2 and Beta without taking anything away from those who have achieved the higher levels. Maybe there wouldn't be so much noise from the sidelines. Cheers The first badges types implemented was just the badges signals/symbols that you see today inside the colorful squares (for the projects that are running at that times). Despite of be a little bit out of date, the link below could help to show what we have at begining badge times. Take a look at just the symbols, without any backgroud colors than the page were are shown: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Project_badges And to have a timeline/milestone of projects to compare with badges events: http://wcg.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline

I sort of like the idea of getting a badge for completing one or a few tasks, especially for the projects I ran when I first joined WCG (before I worked out what badges were all about).
I could have 2 clear badges (white background below) for doing a few tasks, As the AC@H project had so few tasks my 2tasks completed (11hours) were harder to come by than the 2days of Genome Comparison (one of three projects that ended around the time I started here). What many people would not have realised was that just because you select to run a project does not mean lots of tasks will be sent to you (African Climate)! No doubt I did not get any HDC or HCMD tasks because the server just did not send me any - they would have been selected by default. So some people got or did not get badges down to server allocation (luck). |

With this suggestion though, you'd have to have registered/downloaded and processed at least 1 WU to a Valid status, before you got any kind of recognition We have 70 MILLION WU left to do on just the HCC project and another 70 MILLION on FA@H and you think that a new cruncher that goes to all that effort and then finishes 1 WU and quits should get credit and recognition for their contribution? How about giving out a Volunteer of the Year award for anyone who holds the door open for someone else? Its about making a meaningful contribution, not just showing up. It is far more important to recognize the members who have made really outstanding contributions of 100 years or 1 MILLION WU than the important, but statistically insignificant, completion of a single WU. We are talking about people that cannot even commit long enough to finish 14 meagre days of crunching. WOW |

Maybe there wouldn't be so much noise from the sidelines. I bet there would be people who believe they should be entitled to a badge when they download the software |

We are talking about people that cannot even commit long enough to finish 14 meagre days of crunching. WOW Astrolab, I'm sure your condescending tone is purely unintentional but that is the way your messages about this topic are coming across. As I'm sure you are aware, there are many projects where it was not possible for the majority of people to get 14 days, African Climate anyone?. I'm sure allowing people to have a white badge will not affect your status unduly. Surely you can offer them that much goodwill. Distributed computing volunteer since September 27, 2000 |

Knowing astrolab views, I wouldn't put too much hope in his empathy towards others. The idea is to make crunching more pleasant for everybody at WCG so if a group want white badges and it is not too much trouble ... my view is that request should be granted with no big fuss about it. |

WOW I 100% disagree with this kind of negative coment, and believe that anyone have the right to express opinions without diminished other. And, this post sound as something too much sarcastic and excludent, and not contribute in nothing for the main purpose of this thread. I think that doesn't matter if people contribute with one or million results, once the importance here is the contribution of all at any time, and not sound good and as far more important recognize just people who contribute with a lot of work, so on the contrary just the Top contributors will be qualified (the top 20 among the thousands...). Seems like this thread has got way out of hands.. Personally I don't find badges that important. We already see our contributions from My Grid. Why not some printable certificate where you can see exactly how many million work units you have contributed (with email this to a friend -feature of course)? Like in the BF2 perhaps? Or in Stanford? Both of those users seem to be much happier :)
