Badge for participation

So I sit here looking at my projects that retired when I had 13 days 20 hours racked up and I'm wondering: Why can't there be a badge granted after the first validated result?

Make it dirt colored (what could be a less precious metal) or whatever. Probably white would work well. I think it would just be nice to show that people participated in the project even if they couldn't rack up enough points for a badge.

Shouldn't be too hard to implement either and I know it would be appreciated.

Thanks for you consideration.

Re: Badge for participation

This idea was proposed before, in many forms.

We ask to have it long time ago, during the first time that badges was changed from signals/symbols to colorful squares.

At that time we proposed use just the projects signals/symbols to diferentiate from the formal rule. It was adopted in WCG, in the past, at begining time of badges.

Recently we coment again about this idea in other thread (please see: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,28600 ).

Until now, appear that it don't get enough support from crunchers and WCG to move on get support and be adopted.

Anyway is a great idea in my opinion, once will provide a kind of distinctive reward for all participants which colaborated with WCG at least with a day project processed or a single result returned.

It could be a kind of inclusive rule, which could satisfy someones that arrives in WCG late for many reasons that dosen't matter here, but for frustation or other incompreensible thougths, with the flow of time felt excluded of somethings (despite of don't be there at the right time to participate of the pioners badges events !) and becames practicioners that manytimes post a lot of unstructured coments trying deviate or destroy ideas about badges threads, specially the threads created to celebrate the badges in many aspects, for funny and enjoyment or no.

Good luck. cool idea peace good luck coffee

Re: Badge for participation

I agree that it's a good idea (even though I won't benefit from it, as I didn't get any AC@H WU's - the other 2 badges I'm missing, I aim to get very soon...).

What may be the deciding factor though, is as to whether the techs can fit it in or not. As I'm sure you're well aware, there's not that many of them, and they're rather busy at the moment trying to get all these new projects up and running.

Thus, I'd suggest that it's more a case of WCG priorities rather than the members not being interested/supporting this idea. After all, I know we're all champing at the bit to get these new projects crunched biggrin

Re: Badge for participation

Sorry, but I disagree with the idea. There is nothing wrong with working to earn something rather than just getting gift simply because you show up.

astrolab, I fully agree with you - getting a badge for contributing absolutely nothing, is certainly not on. With this suggestion though, you'd have to have registered/downloaded and processed at least 1 WU to a Valid status, before you got any kind of recognition. Yes, it'd be the 'lowest of the low' level, although everyone's got to start somewhere - and this may encourage people to hang around longer (and get bitten by the 'badge hunters bug').

After all, we constantly say that, whatever each cruncher can contribute (be it very small, or in your case, huge), is appreciated.

sad Re: Badge for participation

I will have at least 3 more badges if this idea will be implemented.
Then again, I ask, yet again, what happened with the idea that the points from the UD be visible and counted for the badges. I have lots of points buried there and they are not recognized I remember that almost all my Genome Comparison work is in UD and I have only 9 days with BOINC because BOINC was in its infancy then at WCG.

The administrators promised many times that they will do the conversion but in the end it was just wind. sad

Do I get another promised or it will be just silence on this?

Re: Badge for participation

damir1978, without wishing to go into the whole UD points conversion arguement, I do believe that the time (as, after all, the badges are calculated on TIME contributed - not points) which was volunteered whilst WCG were using UD, already are taken into consideration with the badges. After all, all my early offerings, are reflected in my badge collection (i.e., GC to name but one).

This suggestion, is to acknowledge those that, due to various different circumstances, missed out on getting a Bronze badge for which ever project they're short on and yet, have returned at least 1 WU for. A knock-on benefit of this, I believe, would be to get people 'hooked' onto the badge chasing game, and thus, encourage them to stay/contribute more biggrin

Wrong! it is only altogether
- the lowest priority in the list of things which can improve WCG's efficiency
- much more complex than it was envisaged at the beginning (please search the forum for details which have been given several times already).

A few other clarifications:
- HCMD (1) was a UD-only project and if you can see HCMD badges in the leftmost column of this forum it is the proof that the time spent under UD is counted for badges.

- for this matter (badges) the question of points (whether UD or BOINC) is irrelevant since it is based on time

- if you have only 9 days of runtime for GC in your individual project stats is is because you have spend 9 days for GC, be it under BONC or UD.

smile Re: Badge for participation

I'll jump in and increment the interest counter for this. praying

If I remember correctly, the first badges had a white (clear) background. That would be be perfect for this "participation" level if runtime > 0. That would be good for the old crunchers who crunched (but not enough crunches) before there were badges and color levels. It would throw a bone to those trying to get enough time on DDDT2 and Beta without taking anything away from those who have achieved the higher levels. Maybe there wouldn't be so much noise from the sidelines. peace
