Re: BETA for type C in DDD2

At this rate it will be years before I get a bronze.

Well, others are hinting around and making you dig... But even though I have only a bronze beta I don't mind sharing. I just don't see any benefit in having the beta crunchers with silver, gold and ruby already, being the only ones getting all the beta WUs.

On the MyGrid tab, Device Manager -> Profile Manager.
Create a new profile for, say, Work (or whatever of the 3 besides Default you have not used yet).

In that profile, uncheck all the task and 'auto-add new' and 'if none available send me something else' boxes.
Check only the 3 tasks marked Intermittent. (I think that's DDDT, IADS and CEP.) Also set all the other options you want in that, as you don't ever want to edit that profile again (someday they'll remove those intermittent tasks altogether, then it won't let you edit that profile again without selecting an active task).

Save that profile, then go to the Beta Testing section and ensure the box is checked for beta after that new profile you just made.

Set your Additional Buffer in Preferences to, say, 0.75 days and cache some extra work units... when you see Uplinger or another tech mention there will be beta work soon, go to MyGrid, Device Manager, select your device name and change them to use the 'Work' profile made above. Then go to Preferences and up the Additional Buffer to, say, 2.75 days. As soon as you click OK it will start requesting work, but you'll get a message from the server that no work is available (because there are no WU's for the intermittent tasks)... in the meantime, you'll still have work to keep crunching until the betas are released. The time between work requests will sequence in a pseudo-random manner (it's like, request; wait 1 minute, request; wait 2 minutes, request; wait 3 minutes, request; wait 7 minutes, request; wait 15 minutes, et cetera, until the wait time gets up to a couple hours, then drops back down to a minute and starts over)... so it's still possible to miss them all because they can easily be depleted completely during the pseudo-random wait - But when you DO get some you should get enough beta WUs to fill the buffer to the level requested (assuming there are enough beta WUs left to do so). Be careful not to tip the barrel too far, or after a while they will Server Abort because quorum/replication has been fulfilled already by other crunchers.

Now, even with that knowledge, your biggest problem will be seeing the announcements in time. No matter which option you choose for Forum subscriptions it will send the alerts only once per day per subscription. Apparently the forum software cannot generate notices of every new post (for possibly thousands of participants, that could indeed create quite a flood of emails)... all you can get is a daily digest of the subject lines/posters with a link to each thread, or a daily digest of the posts with all the message bodies plus links in the alert message you get, but either way it sends you only one message per day per subscription, on a set schedule... and if that scheduled time occurs 5 minutes before Uplinger makes the announcement, then you don't get the alert about it until 23 hours and 55 minutes later. So apparently the way some people do it is point their browser at the Beta Announcement forum and refresh it manually. I don't... if I see the announcement in time, I'll do the 'request intermittent' profile as explained above. If I don't see it, then so what - there will be more coming down the road; if I happen to get some betas anyway, it's just 'extra gravy'. And even that didn't help last week, since Uplinger didn't get a chance to announce them until a couple hours after they were all gone.

So, I hope that helps you 'make your own luck' and get more beta WUs... and maybe once you get at least the bronze it won't seem so frustrating. If you get some, good; if not, no big deal. Crunch on. wink

Re: BETA for type C in DDD2

Was not at the machine yesterday [monitoring remote with BOINCTasks], when these C types came through high priority, but for the 18mb downloads per piece and their variable run time, did hear the fans kick at times when 4 were running concurrently for the 6 hours or so it took to get through 20 of these.

Also this morning there was a memory shortage pop up sitting. Since BOINC is allowed 90% of the rest, 2.7GB ram and swap file is freely expandable, [empty space on disk 150gb], don't know what caused this. Have not seen the actual ram/vm usages. All showed but some of the first few as validated, i.e. not effecting the outcome as shown on the Result Status pages. Nothing in the result logs worth mentioning.

Re: BETA for type C in DDD2

Interestingly, several of the PV C type results had in fact a complete minimum quorum. Never seen before saw the Try Validation in header... probably causing for the clients that have not started these jobs yet to receive a server abort message.

Normally you can click on that link and the server tries the validation (when shown as PV with your wingman). Then after a short time you'll see 'valid', when you refresh the pop-up window.

But now the validation server seems to be down.

Re: BETA for type C in DDD2

Think I compiled the FAQ on this feature, just had not seen it by recollection before on one of my results ;>)

The validators have periodic pausings. It's kind of running multiple intense jobs... sequentially these perform more efficiently than in parallel, particularly if they need lots of memory.

Re: BETA for type C in DDD2

I just picked up a few new Type Cs. Looks like another round of them comming through. At this rate I will never finish the Type As with all this pre-empting going on.

Re: BETA for type C in DDD2

Amazing, yes, got 1 all by itself again:

6923 World Community Grid 06-02-2010 16:18:59 Finished download of BETA_erlc_a212_pdb004_erlc_a212_erlc_phi_18.dat.gzb

Looks like 2 Beta have been stuck in Try Validation - Validation Scheduled since early this morning. Other work validates, so maybe the tech paused this part?????

Re: BETA for type C in DDD2

My AMD Tri-core with 3Gb of memory was down to 11MB of free memory with 3 Betas running. No wonder you have to have 768Mb of memory to run DDDT2

Re: BETA for type C in DDD2

Sek,

You are correct. At this time, the validator is offline. We probably won't turn it back on until monday. The main goal at the moment is to have the work run to completion as this is the bulk of the work. Thank you again for participating in this BETA
