Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

My PC's are still downloading Mapping Cancer Markers Work Units

Hi Keith have you set any of the other limits in the BOINC Client that may have been reached? Such as the transfer at most X Mbytes/day ? Setting these to 0 means an infinite amount. You may have set 0 as the number of days of extra work to download to 0 which isn't infinite in this case. Another possibility is that Network Activity has been suspended in the client.

This is a possibility if the device is new http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,36060

Then you may need to adjust your firewall settings after IBM changed the way they distribute WU from a centralised model to a distributed one

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/about_us/viewNewsArticle.do?articleId=336

Yet another possibility is that the Work Units returned are errored. If the work units are downloading and erroring after a few seconds and then more work units are downloaded and they error out too, to protect itself the World Community Grid will not send any further work units for 24 hours. You can see the status of your Work Units under the My Contribution ->Results Status link above

Erroring Work Units on a PC are usually due to your CPU heatsink being bunged up and a quick spring clean with the Dyson usually resolves.

There are still may work units to crunch to progress the Science that affects Humanity.

Let's just hope our UK Power supply doesn't turn intermittent and that you and me and the rest of the UK crunchers can continue to volunteer our efforts before we are totally priced out of the use of Electricity in this Country

Gas Bill £500 Electricity Bill £300 for the last quarter !!! ($1312.72)

We are having a mild Winter here in the UK and I have A+ - A+++ white goods, CFL Lamps everywhere. All my clothes air dried. Currently living in a 2 Bedroom Terraced House, with one on each side.... so not a Mansion. And now I spend more time being cold than before. Oh and there's just me.

This is a managed crisis with managed poverty. I, and I suspect you Keith, are lucky enough to have sufficient income, for the moment, to continue to run the valuable science here at the World Community Grid - many of my friends and family could not.

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

Today under "Science" Google News excelled itself

First there's the "Science" that the pause in the warming is caused by the Sea absorbing it and hiding it

Then underneath another "Science"news item with the Met Office blaming the UK floods on the Global Warming

OK Science which is it? It is either warming or it isn't - it can't be both.

It is measurably cooling at the moment

not paused or warming

If Climate Science was a Science it would have to face up to cold(er) hard facts

http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/f...climate-change-lord-stern

When are people going to understand this is weather. Unfortunate weather but weather nontheless

There is a reason the Somerset Levels are called the Somerset Levels

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somerset_Levels

Coming from the valleys of Yorkshire, Somerset for me is the place of the huge sky

Also if you build a beautiful railway line along the coast every now and again even if the engineering was done by Brunel

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Devon_Railway_sea_wall

It will occasionally get washed away

I should know I lived in Dawlish from the week of the Eclipse until mid 2003. Dawlish was my station. Once a whole Intercity 125 came to a halt and only I got off. I closed the door behind me and it set off... I felt like royalty smile

If you don't want to live in a house that gets flooded don't buy or rent one in a flood plain. If you do expect it to get flooded every once in a while

Sometimes we need to read behind the hysteria of the moment.

We have another storm barrelling in from the Atlantic this evening

This is mid February.

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

I think we've done it cool

Survived through the bottom of Winter 2013/14

2014-02-14 14:50:00 lowest 30 day average temp 1.242C

1.163C was the lowest on 4th Feb 2011 so it's within a gnats whisker (0.079C)

It can only get warmer from here in the Northern Hemisphere smile

Sorry to everyone South of the Equator sad

My company simply doesn't turn the heating on so we have taken to going to work in Jeans and Jumpers instead of smart office wear.

When it gets bad we keep our coats on

Great isn't it 21st Century Britain
