Hi Jean Pierre

It is a great pleasure to welcome the rest of the world to our country, a world in one country. We have been looking forward to this for 16 years.

We have hosted big sporting occasions before, but nothing on this scale.

I see that Germany and Ghana have just made it through in Group D.

Wow, one more goal and Serbia would have been through at the expense of Ghana!

I enjoyed the two Boateng brothers playing against each other.

Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

The boys (SA) played very well and were unlucky to go out on goal difference; still, a good performance, well done applause
Australia also suffered the same fate, but after capitulating to Germany in the first game, don't quite deserve so much respect. Ghana were luckier, going through on goal difference and will next face the fortunate USA. Should be a good game, given the way both teams play.
Germany won the group and must next face Eng - that might get a bit tasty! We already know the winners of Ger/Eng will face the winners of Mex/Arg. The winners of that could face Portugal or Chile (amongst others). Either way a difficult route to the final, where I expect Brazil will be waiting.

Todays games are:
Group F (early kick off); Slovakia v Italy and Paraguay v New Zealand
Every team in this group could qualify or go out!
Paraguay has the upper hand, as a draw would be good enough for them to go through. New Zealand could go through by a draw on goals scored should the Italy v Slovakia end in a low score draw (unlikely), but realistically need to win because if either Italy or Slovakia win their match they finish a point or two above New Zealand. If New Zealand win and Italy draw, Paraguay would still go through. Slovakia has it all to do; they need to win against Italy and hope that Paraguay win or draw. If Paraguay draw and Italy win by 3 goals (or more) Italy would top the group.
Group E. (late kick off); Cameroon v Holland and Denmark v Japan
Cameroon cannot qualify and Holland are already through. A draw is enough for Holland to guarantee themselves as group winners. Denmark needs to beat Japan to qualify (the game to watch). Should Holland lose and either Denmark or Japan win well, Holland could finish second on goal difference.

Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

Tener un buen viaje y buena suerte (usted y Chile) biggrin

Crazy games today; the holders Italy are out (Slovakia finally turned up) and Japan put on a show against Denmark (who looked good for most of 20 minutes). I fancy Japan in ET for the knock outs! Japan v Paraguay should be a hum-dinger.

For England to win the competition it is possible they would have to beat,
Germany, Argentina, Spain, and then Brazil, ha-ha!

Re: 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa / Soccer Football Thread

Today is the last day of the group stages, and another 4 games will be played.
Group G
Korea DPR v Ivory Coast and Portugal v Brazil.
I know which one I will be watching! A draw is good enough for Brazil to top the group, but should Portugal win, Brazil would still go through in second place. Unfortunately the Ivory Coast has almost no chance of qualifying; they would need to beat North Korea by about six goals and hope Portugal loses badly to Brazil. At the time being Portugal'€™s goal difference is 9 better than the Ivory Coast's.
Group H
It's Chile v Spain and Switzerland v Honduras (the later games)
Chile just need a draw to top the group, but a win for Chile would probably see Spain go out.
Should Chile win and Honduras win, three teams would be on 3 points!
Should Spain win and Switzerland win, three teams would be on 6points!

- Brazil v Portugal was a bad game to watch. There was no interest shown in winning, by either team, and with few chances it ended 0-0. Both teams were narrow, defensive and there was lots of fouling and diving. The ref issued too many cards in the first half (7), missed a red, but then none in the second, despite the fouls continuing!
From what I watched of the Ivory Coast v North Korea, it was a one sided game, with the Ivory Coast being comfortable winners (3-0). Alas it was not enough, and the Ivory Coast went out of the competition on 4 points.
