Re: Interesting news articles about the flu

How sad this is sad

California Study Shows Those 50 and Older Most Likely to Die if Hospitalized
Older Patients Most Likely to Die From H1N1 Influenza

An analysis of more than 1,000 California patients hospitalized with H1N1 flu during the first four months of the pandemic found that infants were most likely to be admitted, and patients 50 and older were most likely to die once admitted.
In the first four months of the pandemic, H1N1, like the seasonal flu, was especially severe in older people, who are more likely to have underlying health conditions, says lead author Janice Louie, a public-health medical officer at the California Department of Public Health.....

Re: Interesting news articles about the flu

You know, if this was not a pandemic, the drug trials would take so long that the virus would have mutated many times before the first antivirals would be sanctioned for general use, assuming any drug research was even invested in.
Given the health systems present depth of bureaucracy, anything similar would therefore likely become pandemic anyway. Perhaps this is the kick up the rear the health services needed to remodel their archaic systems.

Tamiflu-resistant swine flu spreads between patients

Our project could make a difference at some point.

Re: Interesting news articles about the flu

The effectiveness of Tami flu is not yet understood in Swine Flu victims, but what is known is that it needs to be administered within 48hours and most people dont go to hospital until after this. So when doctors gave this to patients it generally had no effect other than to ensure the emergence of new strains of resistant swine flu.

I dont think this project is presently researching Swine Flu.

WHO Says Swine Flu May Have Peaked In the US on Saturday November 21, @11:18AM

Hugh Pickens writes "The World Health Organization says that there were 'early signs of a peak' in...f the Northern Hemisphere , including the US. The American College Health Association, which surveys more than 250 colleges with more than three million students, said new flu cases had dropped 27 percent in the week ending on November 13th from the week before, the first drop since school resumed in the fall. Nonetheless, Dr. Anne Schuchat, the director of vaccination and respiratory disease at the CDC, chose her words carefully. 'We are in better shape today than we were a couple of weeks ago ,' she says. 'I wish I knew if we had hit the peak. Even if a peak has occurred, half the people who are going to get sick haven't gotten sick yet.' Privately, federal health officials say they fear that if they concede the flu has peaked, Americans will become complacent and lose interest in getting vaccinated, increasing the chances of another wave. However, Dr. Lone Simonsen, a former CDC epidemiologist, says she expects a third wave in December or January, possibly beginning in the South again. Based on death rates in New York City and in Scandinavia, Simonsen argues that both 1918 and 1957 had mild spring waves followed by two stronger waves, one in fall and one in midwinter, adding thatin the pandemic of 1889, the bulk of the deaths occurred in the third wave . 'If people think it's going away, they can think again.'"

So far our autumn has been extremely mild in the Italian boot, 16-21C, but when real winter comes around, if one can call it that these years, many expect a serious burst. Whilst up north there are extensive inoculation programs running, hear not see not much here, except major family doctor opposition: http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=110686&sectionid=3510212. The med-cartel has decided on an alternate to Tamiflu... think it's called Retsofin or similar (sounded like that when speaking to the pharmacist)... it's more expensive, and price-competition does not exist, period.

Meantime the Italian athletes planned to go to Vancouver are getting their shots... that is important, for sports success is uplifting to our nation. http://www.inform.com/article/Italy%20plans%2...nations%20for%20Vancouver

Re: Interesting news articles about the flu

The winter period in most of Europe is from November to March.
It has not even had a chance to peak here yet!
On a worldwide basis it cannot subside until it has reached a peak everywhere. There will be more mutations and WHO does not know what they will do? I am as much concerned about the opportunities that this flu will present to other viruses. In the past there have been many more virulent pandemics.

Re: Interesting news articles about the flu

I know that the authorities here in Scotland are really concerned that the swine flu might combine with the bird flu and cause a serious mutation. They say that if this happens that there is every possibility that pigs might fly. Swine flew would be the new name of this mutation if it happens.
