Swine flu 'reaches 160 countries'

The swine flu virus has reached 160 countries and could infect two billion people within the next two years, the World Health Organization has said.
A senior WHO official, Keiji Fukuda, said the virus was still in its early stages and would continue to spread for some time.

Mr Fukuda said work on a vaccine was intensifying but safety could not be compromised by rushing the process....

Where Will You Get Your H1N1 Vaccine? Information Remains Unclear

With school about to start next week in many parts of the U.S., and dire warnings sounded about an expected rapid spread of the H1N1 virus, public health officials appear to be struggling to put in place an effective plan to inoculate the nearly 159 million Americans at the greatest risk.

Swine flu: 10 things you need to know

Since it first emerged in April, the global swine flu epidemic has sickened more than 1 million Americans and killed about 500. It's also spread around the world, infecting tens of thousands and killing nearly 2,000.
This summer, the virus has been surprisingly tenacious in the U.S., refusing to fade away as flu viruses usually do. And health officials predict a surge of cases this fall, perhaps very soon as schools reopen.
A White House report from an expert panel suggests that from 30 percent to half the population could catch swine flu during the course of this pandemic and that from 30,000 to 90,000 could die....

Breakthrough In Universal Flu Vaccine Development, Japan

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/137953.php

If you can get this group to tell you which protein they directed the new vaccine against, you should be able to look for medicines directed against that protein (the one the virus uses to attach to human cells) and possibly get a suitable treatment for most types of flu. That protein can't mutate very easily, since the mutated virus isn't likely to be able to attach to any human cells and therefore probably can't reproduce.

I found some information about two osteoporosis medicines recently found to kill some flu viruses:

You might want to check if these molecules bind to a swine flu protein, and if so, make sure you've checked if you've included enough other biphosphonates in the molecules you're checking.

Note to anyone wanting to try these medicines - they have enough side effects that you should read up on the side effects before trying them.

Re: Interesting news articles about the flu

Something to bookmark, and found on a climate blog of all places:
Due to Pandemic H1N1 Influenza and concerns about the 2009/2010 flu season, the EBSCO Publishing Medical and Nursing editors of DynaMed™, Nursing Reference Center™ (NRC) and Patient Education Reference Center™ (PERC) have made key influenza information from these resources freely available to health care providers worldwide.

The editorial teams will monitor the research and update these resources continuously throughout the upcoming flu season.

http://www.ebscohost.com/flu/

The Patients section is the interesting part with multilingual information.

Meantime other influenza research centers have come forward hooking into Chinese news, reporting that 1 flu shot is providing a 78% immunity, 2 shots 100%. Based on age groups and risk classes, either 1 or 2 are being provided.
