Sebelius: Swine Flu Shots May Start Early October

The nation's first round of swine flu shots could begin sooner than expected, with some vaccine available as early as the first week of October, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Sunday.
Sebelius said she is confident the vaccine will be available early enough to beat the peak of the expected flu season this fall and that early doses are intended for health care workers and other high-priority groups.....

CDC: 3.4 million inhalable H1N1 vaccine doses available soon

3.4 million doses of vaccines will be available," said Dr. Jay Butler, who heads the 2009 H1N1 Vaccine Task Force at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"All of that vaccine is the inhalable vaccine," he said Friday.
That form of vaccine is marketed in the United States as FluMist and is approved only for healthy individuals between the ages of 2 and 49. Pregnant women are not allowed to get this type of vaccine because it contains a live virus,,,,,.

Re: Interesting news articles about the flu

Yes indeed wink

Study: Flu viruses can spark heart attacks

Heart patients who catch the flu may have more to worry about than just a fever or the sniffles: the virus could also spark a heart attack, new research shows.
Amid the global outbreak of swine flu, experts say it's crucial that heart patients get vaccinated against both regular flu and swine flu to avoid medical problems. Doctors said swine flu isn't any more dangerous than regular flu, but it's important for heart patients to get vaccinated because more flu viruses will be circulating this year.
British researchers analyzed 39 previous studies of heart patients and found a consistent link between flu and heart attacks. Up to half of all unexpected flu deaths were due to heart disease, the researchers found....

Answers to your H1N1 vaccine questions

None too soon, the much-anticipated vaccine for H1N1, or swine flu, is about to arrive in U.S. communities. But with 28 pregnant women in the nation having died from the virus, a number of other groups at risk and flu activity widespread in Texas and much of the country, there are a host of questions about the pecking order, the places to get the shot and the symptoms that should necessitate a trip to the doctor. CDC: 76 children dead of swine flu

Health officials said Friday that 76 U.S. children have died of swine flu, including 19 new reports in the past week — more evidence the new virus is unusually dangerous for the young.
The regular flu kills between 46 and 88 children a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That suggests deaths from the new H1N1 virus could dramatically outpace children's deaths from seasonal flu, if swine flu continues to spread as it has...
