Thanks for the welcome! Saw you guys over at GPUgrid and I joined up. :) Am a refugee from the grid.org/UD days, been crunching since 2000 IIRC lols! Am interested to hear how the Vista 64 works out, since I"m wary of using 64 bit OS, some of my older programs might not work. ![]() Welcome to the team! I saw your stats on BoincStats and I'm guessing you've got a 260 GTX for graphics? |

@brown chris,
----------------------------------------I'll wait for the actual release of Windows 7 before I take the plunge. Too wary of betas and all! Been hearing a LOT of good reviews of that OS lately. Hope MS finally does it right. @Jonathan Figdor, Yes, and a 9800 that I've been experimenting with. Seems that Vista doesn't want to run well with that card and a 185.85 Nvidia driver and the latest Intel chipset driver (had to use the one before the latest).... ugh... learned the hard way after like 6-7 reinstalls! ![]() ![]() |

Am interested to hear how the Vista 64 works out, since I"m wary of using 64 bit OS, some of my older programs might not work. ![]() There are lots of us refugees from grid.org/UD. I got disgusted with them when they sent out the same works unit hundreds of times each because they had no new work. That was Nov/Dec 2004. I heard of WCG and jumped over here. So hearty welcome to you. I am not running any GPU projects - Only WCG but almost all my work units are being processed on 64bit Vista machines. A few on 32bit Vista and some on XP. I have had absolutely no problems with WCG on Vista 64bit. Earlier, I had problems with other programs on 64bit but those have all been resolved now. It just occurred to me that if you have a list of programs that you are worried about, you might want to list them here so others that are running Vista64 can look at it and see if they know what will work and what will not. Just a thought. On Windows 7, I used to be on the bleeding edge but I have since given that up. It reminds me of the old saying "You can tell the Pioneers by the arrows in their backs". I am too old to take too many arrows and now mostly only work on paying projects (Programming or Websites). Actually I would like it if Windows 7 gets delayed for a few years. The changeover is likely to cost me too much money and Vista works fine for me; kind of like my old pickup truck. Again welcome to our eclectic crew at MOT. From the gnarly old veterans to the fresh-faced college students there is an interesting and informative mix of experience, knowledge, enthusiasm and skepticism. Something for everyone. ![]() |

Wow - Out of 3 GB of memory on my computer, yoyo@home is using 2GB of it. The WU's "ecm 0.03" are taking a gig of memory each. two of them are running, and now I have wu's from other projects with a status of "waiting for memory". And my computer is running sooooooo slowwwwwwww... might have to pause a few of them. Sounds like the application is dynamically allocating memory .... as much as is available. It apears that it is allocating all memory up to the maximum allowed by "virtural memory" and then is counting on the memory paging to manage it thereby eating up all the I/O capacity as well as all the real memory working set -- aka "Thrashing". (This always has been a horrible practice but has been practiced since the beginning of virtural memory systems in the early 70s and has been practiced by people that assumed that the entire computer was at their disposal) . How/Why that is happening is not clear. I see you later switched to Vista64. Clearly this is a guess, but I would guess that the program was mistaking Virtural Memory for Real Memory in your old operating system and either recognizes it correctly in Vista64 or Vista64 reigned it in to prevent the thrashing that was likely going on earlier. In either case, it sounds like the problem is resolved for now. Welcome to 64bitland (There is room for everyone ) . ![]() |

I've had a clean copy installed for quite some time, and the reason it's a clean copy is that I had to force a driver onto it that it didn't want. Needless to say, that was the wrong thing to do and it wouldn't start up any more. At that time, I just switched back to Vista 32 and stayed there. It's nice to be back in the 64 bit world, though. This computer actually feels much faster, now! Updates took all night, and I'm slowly installing all the programs I need, but it looks like I'm going to stay with this. My games still don't like 64 bit, though, so I will have to reboot every now-and-then to play those. The memory problem is overwith. It's actually only using about 1.5 gigs right now and that's everything! Plus, I have my entire 4 gigs of memory available again! ![]()

Has anyone ever tried this?
----------------------------------------I know that SLI needs matching video cards, but what would happen if I put a different video card in along side my 275. Say, a 9800. If I don't strap them with the SLI connector, would GPUGRID still use both cards? My computer has two power supplies in it, so I'm not worried about a lack of power... Just curious - I would try it, but I don't want to bung up my pristine copy of Vista just yet...

Another silly question.. what is the REAL difference between 32 bit and 64 bit systems?
