Okay, i'll make it sort of like a "contest".. I've been known to help out other people above and beyond the "call of duty" so to speak.. so, if I do end up buying something, I might accidentally buy an extra video card.. that I won't use/need.. that might find its way into someone's mailbox.. (dang my sense of humor is dry..) 1) I have an HP monitor.. i'm guessing most pc's can hook up to it without a problem.. 2) Budget: I'll say 2000, but i'd like to spend less... (who wouldn't..) 3) would like microsoft word on it.. 4) main uses: wcg, of course.. some gaming, but nothing terribly graphically intensive.. 5) would like wireless networking.. will keep the pc I have now, and also connect my mother's laptop (upstairs) to the network.. 6) I play some music (itunes..) 7) have an HP printer too.. almost forgot.. compatibility issues? any questions, feel free to ask.. i'll update and check in as much as possible.. Dr. Mike.. ![]() Dr. Mike, I need to know: Is that a monitor, or a panel (CRT or LCD), and if it's a panel does it have a digital connector (DVI, they are usually white). Are you wanting to part a box together, or buy an OEM computer? Is this a purchase you are wanting to keep for a while, or use it until the next generation of processors comes around? What kind of case are you looking for? Mini's, desktops, small or medium towers... Mini's (and most desktops) won't be able to hold the large graphic cards. Are you thinking about dual video cards? Any preferences for AMD or Intel processors? Do you need it to be quiet, or cool? Do you want just Word, or the whole Office suite? Your printer is able to use USB, I hope. LPT ports are quickly disappearing off of motherboards. $2000 is a lot for "just" a computer. That puts you in the mid-to-upper range of gaming computers and suggests that you want the "good stuff". Do you already have a wireless network set up, or are you needing an access point, too? Are you wanting to stream video over the wireless? That's about all I can think of right now...

I'll take the easy ones...
Okay, i'll make it sort of like a "contest".. <snip> The only thing to check is if it is connected via DVI or a regular VGA connection. The new system will almost certainly be DVI. If the cable it is connected with now has blue ends, it is probably VGA. If the cable has white ends, it is probably DVI. There are inexpensive DVI -> VGA adapters, so it's not much of an issue as long as you are prepared. The the cable does not have blue or white ends, give us more of a description and/or we can point you at some online pictures so you can tell which it is. Many monitors have supported both for the last 2-3 years.1) I have an HP monitor.. i'm guessing most pc's can hook up to it without a problem.. <snip> Not a problem. 3) would like microsoft word on it.. <snip> This might require an additional wireless card. Not a big deal. You may be able to get wireless added, if necessary, when you order.5) would like wireless networking.. will keep the pc I have now, and also connect my mother's laptop (upstairs) to the network.. 6) I play some music (itunes..) No problems. Just be sure to get a large enough disk drive (at least 500GB, don't settle for anything less). Large drives are cheap these days.7) have an HP printer too.. almost forgot.. compatibility issues? That might depend on how old the printer is. If there are Vista drivers and the printer is USB attached, it should be no problem. any questions, feel free to ask.. i'll update and check in as much as possible.. Dr. Mike.. ![]() Hope that helps. - D |

anyone seen any websites with two i7 processor core pcs? I thought I saw a few when I first started looking at buying a new computer.. now i can't find those websites.. :( Dr. Mike.. Mike, Not sure if the link will work, but here ya go: http://www.dell.com/content/products/productd...;cs=19&l=en&s=dhs It's a Dell Studio XPS Desktop for $799. The only downfall I can see is that it comes with an ATI card, and no option for an nVidia. If you wanted to do GPUGRID, you would still have to buy a video card... Plus, I haven't tried WCG or GPUGRID on 64 bit Vista, yet, so I don't how that works. Overall, though, a fairly decent computer for not a bad price. Most of my WCG work is run on 64bit Vista. No problems at all. That is a great price for an I7. <EDIT> I noticed a discussion earlier about HT on the I7. It bears little resemblence to the earlier HT and works great in my experience (unlike earlier versions) Throughput wise it is much like having additional cores. </EDIT> <EDIT2> Rather than buy Microsoft Word, you should try the free version of Open Office. It will allow you to interchange documents with Microsoft Word users transparently and includes other neat programs. </EDIT2> ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by RT at May 28, 2009 10:45:08 AM] |

Clueless in Missouri, Dr. Mike.. Mike, I think starting slow is the best plan. If you're looking for a machine to tide you over until the new intel processors debut, I would aim for more like $1000-1500 so you can replace (or in reality, supplement) in two-ish years. My build is going to be extremely value oriented. And for the record Mike, I think one graphics card would be enough for now. Remember, graphics cards are easily upgradable (and cheaper often, when bought from NewEgg) so I think the 260 GTX core 216 is the best starting point dollar/processing-power. |

I guess I do want something more temporary.. but when do you know you have something you can work with? I mean, they're discontinuing i7 920's and 940's.. what's to say they won't do the same thing 6 months after they come out with their newer processors? At some point you have to choose, or you'll never be able to upgrade at all..

----------------------------------------Testing of a CUDA-enabled version of AQUA's application has started 25-May-2009 The AQUA@home project needs enourmous computing resources, so we have been working on using NVidia GPUs to reduce the running time of our application. We are happy to announce that version 3.00 of AQUA's application, supporting NVidia CUDA cards under Microsoft Windows, is now available for testing. Linux and Mac versions will follow in the next few weeks. We hope to gradually increase the performance of this version. I totally missed this. I am going to check it out. It appears their wu's use BOTH CPU and GPU. GPU projects are poping up all over. ![]() EDIT: I brought up a quad with a 9800GT and am running 4 AQUA CPU wu's and 1 AQUA GPU. It looks just like GPUGrid. There are many reports of crashing wu's so I guess I will crash some too. It does not work with other GPU wu's. When it switches back to GPUGrid the AQUA wu crashes. I am just going to run this machine on AQUA until I figure out if they "play well with others". EDIT2: From a post from their admin I found out: "Hi all, AQUA's application needs to calibrate its Monte Carlo chains after start up. This is a probabilistic process and it is not known in advance how long this will take, so the program display minimal signs of progress during this phase. We have shown the arbitrary progress value of 3% to indicate how much work was done during this phase. So it is important to note that while the progress indicator is below 3%, the program may seem stuck for hours. Please allow the program to continue to run. After the 3% mark, the program will indicate its progress more or less regularly. Thanks for your help and understanding." ![]() ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Dataman at May 28, 2009 8:38:46 PM] |
