I will chill grasshopper.. Dr. Mike By the way, how is the new job going? I start Monday.. Monday is an "orientation" day, which translates into meeting a bunch of people I will hardly ever see, getting my e-mail account, talking to some benefits people.. 401k, medical, dental, etc. Tuesday is my first "real" work day with actual human child patient contact.. lol. I can't wait! been away from helping kids for way TOO LONG.. Don't think i'll get an i7 right now.. just a little compulsive I guess.. sigh.. Mike.. You're more than welcome to go for it. Everything gets outdated anyways. I found that waiting is pretty much useless. ![]() |

what's an OEM? never heard that term used before... The following has been clipped from Wikipedia: An original equipment manufacturer, or OEM is typically a company that uses a component made by a second company in its own product, or sells the product of the second company under its own brand. The specific meaning of the term varies in different contexts. OEM hardware is typically no different than retail hardware, with the exception of bulk pricing not available to the normal consumer, including all cables, software and manuals. The OEM, aka computer solution builder will include these materials in the finished product. The exceptions to this would be large manufacturers who will order specialized modifications to the equipment resulting in a specialized replacement parts niche. OEM is sometimes used synonymously with the term bulk hardware. Good description! When I asked about OEM, I was actually referring to computer companies such as Dell or HP. ![]() For Dr. Mike, I would still go with the $799 Dell if he is itching to get one right away. Another $125-$150 for a GTX 260, and perhaps get a student version of Microsoft Office for about $100. Otherwise, I would just wait until September when the new chip comes out. The GTX and Office can be moved to the new computer when he upgrades, so those expenses aren't lost, anyway... And even if he doesn't upgrade right away, it's still a nice computer at a nice price. I fear the cooling on that Dell... |

I fear the cooling on that Dell... I have several Dell computers and IMHO they over cool them. I don't buy Dell computers as I prefer to build my own boxes. They are given to me when I update other people's systems, but they sure make great crunchers. My latest one came with a socket 775 P4. I bought a 2.2 GHz core 2 duo, dropped it in the socket, updated the bios and set bionic at 95% processor time. Lot's of hot air coming out the back and it hasn't missed a beat in over 6 months. The processor runs about 55C almost maxed out. I have another Dell that sits next to my main computer, running a 2.6 GHz P4 HT chip set at 85% Bionic that's been running for over 3 years! I just need to shut it down every now-and-then and hit it with an air compressor. Dell does very good with cooling.
BIG BANG THEORY: In the beginning there was nothing... which exploded

I fear the cooling on that Dell... I have had dozens (literally) of Dells for myself and others I support. There has been but one cooling problem and that was just a fan that would speed up and slow down in a distracting way. The specific Dell listed is like the one I have sitting a few feet away from me while I type this, running 8 WUs 24/7 without any cooling problems for about 6 months so far. |

I have two Dell's and they have been EXCELLENT machines. They have larger fans than my HP's and I have had no cooling problems even with OC'ed vid cards running. **** AQUA/GPU UPDATE Good news >>> They are still running. Bad News >>> THEY ARE STILL RUNNING!! They are huge. 5.21% complete after 18+ hours on a 9800GT. Too big for me. **** No new news on MilkyWay. ![]() ![]() |

They have been running with no problems at 100% 24/7 since early 2007. Both are Core2 Duos. I did buy a pad with a fan in it to set the laptop on, but other than that, they are stock. I am a happy camper! |

My roommate's Dell is hilariously undercooled by a feeble 120mm exhaust fan and a basic hs/fan. No intake fans. No bottom-mounted power supply. No real feel of airflow at all. Ended up cooking a few hard drives so he bought a replacement pc. Now neither of us are tempted to give them another shot. |
