Re: Waterloo

It was a beautiful day - started out hazy, but turned into what you see in the picture.
Couldn't be better for climbing 226 steps ... a little more than the 199 to Whitby Church and Abbey.
The Panorama was well worth visiting also. They had a good "sound illustration" to supplement
the paintings and the modeled dead horses and maimed men; I don't have my dictionary
- but you heard "the sound horses make", gunfire, screams and shouting and even bag pipes.
I got myself a good road map of Belgium and Luxembourg for future reference.
There are tons of good things to say for sat-navs, but I can feel mine is about to make me a map-illiterate.
I need maps also so see the big picture.
From there I set my sat-nav to avoiding motorways and had the good luck
to go to a couple of picturesque villages.
Belgium is really an attractive country
- clean, good infrastructure, sights everywhere
- and the nicest petunia arrangements loampposts and anywhere else they can hang them
- even a private home is a sight
and it now comes with smiling Belgians. smile
Of course, all of this ate my time, so I found a place for the night
in Gelsenkirchen in the Ruhr area of Germany
- home to Schalke 04 (soccer team for those who are not fans).
@ Ted: Please give "A" a kiss on the cheek from me. I miss her immense historical knowledge and her as well.
@ Guitar Man: Yes, the sound is a little "stuffed" ... it's far, far better live tongue

Re: Waterloo

Evening all

Actually my birthday is tomorrow on St Michael and all the Angels although that is hardly a description of me.

Part of it I shall spend with cousins at Worthing where one of them shares the same birthday but with a good few years later.

I have, however, put a a bottle of champers in the fridge for when I get back to celebrate the fact that I've survived another decade.

Thanks for the kind thoughts. It's a shame I haven't had a chance to meet you all since the big gathering in Regents Park.

Did a bit of shopping this morning and reckon that it must be the hottest day of the year so far.

Re: Waterloo

Good Morning!
Dewey dawn, calm and cool
- it will be as wonderful weather as it grew into yesterday
- where travelling north through Germany was a pleasure
because the leaves had begun to turn
so the Autobahn actually looked pretty
and it did not feel boring at all.
