Re: Re:Edwardians

Good morning all,
Merling day is here again, gives me plenty of exercise jostling with bus loads of pensioners between the shelves, who are all after the same items I need. If I didn't need to eat I would not bother.
Merle, let me know the date of your hospital thingy, hope it all goes well.

Myton is an interesting village, it was first inhabited by the Ancient Brits, then the Saxons and Danes. It is mentioened in the Doomsday Book as 'Mittune.' In 1300 and something a battle took place here between the Scots and a rag tag army mainly of priests.Tens of thousands were killed. The battle site is well marked, it is less than 500 yards from my home. The bridge at Myton was built in the 1800's by the local squire, and was rebuilt recently by the local villagers raising the money. It is unique in that it is a road bridge that goes no-where, being on what is now a bridle path. The village pump is being repaired at the moment, and should be in place sometime this year. The oldest house, as far as I can tell was built in 1664. Sir Ken Morrison of supermarket fame, lives here in the Hall, and now farms loads of the local land, breeding both cattle and sheep. And I and dog? We roam the streets and fields, and wander down the riverside to where the Swale and the Ure meet to form the Ouse, the river that runs through York. It's rural. It's quiet, and it's home.

Re: Re:Edwardians

Great travelogue Ted.
I'm sure I heard you relating it at the local picture house just before the Pathe News came on or Pearl & Dean showed their adverts.
It also brings to mind the Peter Sellers spoof about a London suburb "Balham gateway to the South" Across the verdant grass lands of Battersea Park .....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RTWk9QIKS0
And while it is a spoof , in hindsight its a good representation of the shorts we saw in the cinema.
Also having been made in 1950's just after the war shortages in the cafe' were quite the norm .

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
As you said its Merling day again ,and from your description
things haven't changed much over the years. Fighting in the "Isles" repelling the invading hoards, trolley rage even ??
It will be good for you when your village pump is repaired save you having to chuck buckets into the swale and cart it home. of course it will cause a glut on the local jobs market Milkmaids and watercarriers looking for new positions and the second hand shops will be unable to sell all the redundant yokes

Re: Re:Edwardians

That was an appetizing description of your home village
- done with facts, poetry, love and the sense of belonging.

If I do get the chance to come there, I hope you and dog will take me along on one of your walks.

Re: Re:Edwardians

Evening all

All the best Merle, we'll all be thinking of you.

It's been cool here all day but, on the upside, the boiler mechanic came on time and seems to have sorted things out satisfactorily. The nice thing is that it's a small service firm and I've had the same one of two guys for the last 14 years who also installed the current one. And, today's call was free because it was only seven weeks since they did the last regular service.

Re: Re:Edwardians

Good morning everyone. Windy day today, something I ate? Nah it's outside!
Not much use for milkmaids in this area den, it's all beef cattle and sheep.
Balham and Peter, that brings back a lot of memories.
As for walking, if it aint raining dog and I can often be seen disappearing over the hillside pockets laden with treats for him and medicines for me. Neither of us need much of an excuse to get ut.
