Re: Re:Edwardians

he-he
biggrin
I'll get you some armchair exercise then:
Suppose I decide to fire up Rosie and go to Guitar Man's homecoming party (parties) in the Poole area?
What should I do?
(BTW - I forgot to buy those peas for mushy in Germany - talk of an unconcentrated mind - but those I can get in GB)
I once told you I thought I had done Great Britain, but still wanted to see York and ... and

On my list is:
East Kirkby Airfield
York
Coventry Transport Museum
Lake District

In case we go, Rosie would like to take the DFDS ferry from Dunkirk
(never been there either - must be tons to see)
to Dover, where she would take a left on the wrong side of the road direction Poole ...
... so what would you suggest?

Rosie asks kindly not to be led through Greater London
- found ourselves in Greenwich on a trip to Scotland a dozen or so years ago and that was scary
- going the wrong way in roundabouts with scores and scores of other motorists
who came across as more than a little egocentric
shock

What must I NOT miss on this - my probably last - trip to Great Britain?
smile

Mornin...... biggrin

Take M2 motorway from Dover to M25
Clockwise round M25 to M3
Down M3 all the way until it becomes M27/A31
A31 to Poole/Bournemouth...

Re: Re:Edwardians

Good Morning!
Still sunny, but clouds ready to move in to stay for the bettter part of the week, weeping clouds, that is
.... but calm and still temperate temperatur (which means temperature in case you forgot)
wink

Thank you, Scribe. But that was not what I was aiming at
(because Rosie and her sat-nav can find Poole and knows we should take a left after setting tyres on English ground).
What I meant was: What should I see besides Guitar Man - and the small list I made above, and I quote:
East Kirkby Airfield
York
Coventry Transport Museum
Lake District

What should I see besides that when this may be my last trip to England,
knowing very well that I have seen something already - Chartwell and Oxford to mention some?

Re: Re:Edwardians

Good morning all.

If you visit York, you should see Cliffords Tower, and the Viking Museum, and a visit to Eden Camp is worth a trip, (Its on Sat Nav, type in Eden Camp York) It was an Italian Prison in WW2, now a museum. Cliffords Tower is a medieval castle keep.

Re: Re:Edwardians

Thank you, Tony

biggrin

that's the kind of tips I'm after.
That's for York proper, and I did have the Viking digs and the ensuing museum in mind,
but didn't know the other two interesting things you mentioned.

If any of you can think of anything else en route from Dover to Poole to York
- skirting a huge semicircle to the West of London, "Rosie" insists -
touching on Coventry and East Kirkby and the Lake District - either going up or returning to Dover, I'm game

Re: Re:Edwardians

morning all sun shine has sent the thermometer mounted on front of house up to 76f .
********************
Historic Tours.
Your trip route plan, including to East Kirby intrigued me till I googled it and its now clear that you want to sit in the Naffi with chicken on a raft & cuppa char devilish
************************
Coventry
One wonders about this .Is it given your love of cars a visit to the site of the Daimler factory a homage ?
You have never mentioned an interest in white horses? but the name Godiva and Coventry are for ever linked so are you planning an enactment 2011 style ?
(Godiva Btw doesn't refer to the Coventry climax Fire pump)

BTW, It was Ted who was the tour guide advisor for York.
Ted is the wise older/elder brother of Tony.Ted is so wise because of his diet,
Often eating quantities of fish & chips proven brain food.

This is Gravelly hill interchange ^^^^^ I did have at one time a jigsaw puzzle It was far harder to finish that than it is to drive these roads.
You do not need to worry about using your sat nav as England does have sign posts to which interesting places are marked on a brown sign along with the main towns and cities.
Lake Districtand the three K's Keswick, Kirk-stone & Kendal

I can see you heading for Keswick and the pencil museum
Kirkstone and Hardknot pass to test Rosie , Hardknot was the site of a Roman fort looking across the solway to Scotland for those invading celts.
When you reach Kendal you can replenish your energy with Kendal Mint Cake something that sustains mountain climbers in the Himalayas. Maybe you would like something some thing with more substance and whilst its not a "K" but a "C" Cartmel has its sticky toffee Pudding .... enjoy your trip

Re: Re:Edwardians

First of all:
@ Edwardian - I'm sorry for the mistake.
Do you know what happened? My mushy mind thought: York, Tony.
I didn't even look at the left bar to see who posted.
My mushy knew!
Tony lives in York, right?
Tony gives me tips on York ... can I be excused, please?
blushing

Secondly:
@ don den: Would you mind to expand - in English, mind you - on
"the Naffi with chicken on a raft & cuppa char"
So far I can with Ghost Plane's words neither confirm nor deny
as I haven't the shadow of a clue as to what you mean.
It may turn up to be a good thing. Lemme hear, please.
tongue

I have no route plan, yet, and don't even know for sure whether Rosie and I will go, yet.
I have a few waypoints as listed and now expanded narrowly by Ted
wink
and look for more
- after that sat-nav (MapSource on my computer)
will be put to work creating the route connecting the waypoints.
Preferably we should like to take the smaller (and presumably) prettier roads
(but narrow, narrow if I remember correctly)
and apply the brakes at each intriguing sight wayside.

And, yes, I love cars of any age - we recently had a car session, remember? So that was my reason
for adding Coventry a long time ago - I make notes when I come across something, and I often forget why
- so I adore the Internet
smile
Godiva and Coventry - tell me more (in English, please)?
A 2011 re-enactment, hmmm, my hair is too short
cool
I love the brown signs and I love sat-nav

- and that's those bad cases of volvulus as in your picture that would be slightly off-putting to Rosie,
but I tell her that round-abouts-going clockwise with wild, wild drivers are much worse

Re: Re:Edwardians

Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (NAAFI)
catered for the services since 1921 and all bases had a naffi Naffi tea is good and strong And might or might not have contained bromide wink

Chicken on a raft & Char
Incorrect as it should be Cha.
(Char is a Lake district fresh water Fish found in Windermere )
Cha is also a corruption of chai
dating back to the Indian Raj
when Chai wallahs served tea
so thats a cuppa "rosie lee"=Tea
Chicken on a raft=Egg on Toast

Identity correction.... Old Sage resides In or near the footwear capital of England , Northampton where he was involved in an interesting (RH) foot activated mode of transport ..... devilish
