34f damp Good morning
----------------------------------------still frozen patches tho ............. The snow and Ice will go away falling buildings will take a long time >>>>>>>>>>> I never actually lived in a Hi tech Hoffhaus only in my dreams. Low tech was the way I went. While residing in Rye Sussex my home was a thatched cottage 18inches of straw on the roof total wooden construction underneath the only brick work was the central chimney serving four fire place's Wood and straw have excellent insulation properties ,I read somewhere some thing like one inch of wood equivalent to 9 inches of standard brick We were always warm in that house . Council Planning people have some weird ideas as to what is safe or correct for the area.Building with local vernacular stone or wattle and daub is okay, but also they are often happy to allow construction of a neo Georgian estate of little boxes Around here just up the road in the lake district cottages are supposed to blend in, slate is the preferred material . The attractiveness of an English village or town is the higgledy piggledy nature of the various house's Wood and Straw a Fire risk ? Well yes but not as bad as you might think. I once went to a building exhibition in Olympia one of the products on sale was Stramit board compressed straw clad with paper . Part of the demonstration was a blow lamp playing on this board it charred a little but remained intact as a workable fire break Wood has a complicated way in fire conditions heat applied to the wood causes the surface to give off combustible gasses and its these that burn . Wearing my fireman's hat I can tell you that I was taught the" triangle of fire" Heat Oxygen and Combustible material remove any one and the burning will cease. In buildings using steel girders (RSJ's) can and does conduct heat into adjoining rooms/buildings when you think the fire is contained in the first house it can spring up next door . We in Lancaster have recently had a perverse application of planning law. We had an old building housing a bus station and public swimming pool the façade was stone built with Corinthian columns . when the place stopped being used the site was sold and some well meaning busy body slapped on a preservation order and it was made a listed building.... All well and good several years went by while suitable designs were offered up retaining the stone façade. Eventually we have a huge abomination built on top of the old bits ITs Orange on colour looks like a Drum with windows http://www.lancasterguardian.co.uk/lancastern...y-The-Kingsway.5615086.jp the point of telling you this is the place is clad in wood . High ho, Planners couldnt arrange an inebriated event in a Brewery ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by densnaps at Jan 14, 2010 6:35:38 AM] |

Evening all
Snow overnight again here too but it's pretty damp stuff and doesn't seem to be causing any real problems for either vehicles or pedestrians. I'm lucky to have a laundrette a few doors away so at least drying the washing is not a problem. |

34f zero wind 997mbar..
----------------------------------------Yep seen you poor folk Merle, total amazement at its still with you If its any consolation its snowed here again and its still falling. >>>>>>>>>>>> did look for on line coverage of tennis, & there are a few that you can catch but at first glance they want cash for the privilege !!! Euro sport does seem to be a possible if you have it. Considering the rubbish we have available among the many channels you wear the Channel changer out before finding a watchable programme . Whilst on TV theme, is it just me but do the ad breaks increase in volume causing you to mute it then miss the start of second half ? Keep warm folks ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by densnaps at Jan 14, 2010 6:49:23 AM] |
