Issue with HPFII on 64bit Quads running 64bit Vista. I have both 32 bit processors and 64 bit processors. I have Vista Ultimate 32, Vista Ultimate 64 and XP. I turned on HPFII to the group and these are the results I got before I turned it off:
----------------------------------------64bit Quads with 64bit Vista: Gimli (i7 920) 4 pending, 3 valid, 11 failures. Gandalf (Core2 Q9550) 7 pending, 9 failures The 32 bit Vista results are: Elrond 1 in process, 2 pending, 1 valid Eowyn: 1 pending, 2 valid, 1 failure 32 bit XP results: Theoden: 1 Pending Dual Core with 64bit Vista results Samwise 1 pending, 1 valid. Just thought you might like to know. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by RT at Dec 10, 2008 8:47:25 PM] |

Is there one ring to rule them all?
---------------------------------------- I have plenty of 64-bit processors... problem is they are all running 32 bit OS. I have a Q9550 in Vista Home Premium 32 bit and the only error it has given (that I know of) was one of the CEP jobs earlier this week. The i7 I couldn't tell you anything about other than it's pretty new... What is the time frame for the results of the machines listed? If you have that many errors on the two top machines which are all but brand new I would think there is some kind of hardware/software issue. Are you overclocking? What kind of security software are you running on these machines? Are these machines crunching other projects with no problems? [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 11, 2008 1:26:22 AM] |

What is the time frame for the results of the machines listed?
----------------------------------------From 10 to 2 days ago If you have that many errors on the two top machines which are all but brand new I would think there is some kind of hardware/software issue. The I7 920 is new. Others are not. Are you overclocking? No overclocking or any other tinkering What kind of security software are you running on these machines? On most of them MS OneCare (none on i7) Are these machines crunching other projects with no problems? I am not running the AIDS project. All others run without incident on all machines. Please don't take this wrong but I beleive it is a problem for the HPF II group. Not a problem with my machines. I left this message in hopes they would hunt the bug earlier rather than later ... or tell folks with 64 bit Vista ...and/or other configurations not to run HPFII so they won't waste the time of their machines and the network & servers sorting out all the errors. |

RT,
----------------------------------------HPF2 Production 6.03, beta 6.04 and 6.05 thoroughly fail on my Vista 32bit quad within usually 2 minutes, so taken it off the profile. CEP causes massive amounts of Kernel time and PF Delta, again on Vista only, so it's off the Vista device profile. Rice was a substantial problem on Vista... did not work until 6.17, now very reliable. See a commonality? Opposed, XP causes hardly any hassle.

I am mostly running Cancer now as that is my interest. I have run Cancer, Rice and the new Clean Energy without problems recently. I do not recall any problems with running DDD or AIDS or the old HPF.
----------------------------------------Hum.. I suppose that I will avoid CEP for a time as well since you indicate it is problematic. (It is a shame in both cases as they are both worthy) Since authors have not responded, I suppose they are not concerned. Oh well, I tried. Signing off HPFII Forum. I can be contacted over on MOT (My Online Team) if anyone is trying to find me. ![]() |

Too bad this post was not answered.....I see the same thing on my farm. I only crunch HCC there, and switched the enitre farm over to Vista 64 bit when I realized that V64 was the sweet spot for the (now fixed) HCC page fault problem some time ago. This was not a cheap thing to do on 14 of my WCG quads.....The farm has grown since then.
The immediate issue I have is the the "send other WUs" box is checked if HCC runs out of work. I get HPF2 WUs quite regularly.....Is there an "exclude-a-project-at all-times" button on the WCG page? No, I think not. The other issue I have is the number of errors I have built up in my status pages. (Please don't tell me to ignore them. They exist and waste my farm's efficiency. Time is the key here. I won't waste yours, please don't waste mine.... I don't have an infinite amount of time left......) I really get annoyed when you waste ANY of my CPU cycles on these WUs to fail for any length of time. It must be driving the work schedulers nuts. Vista 64 bit is here to stay, quit sending me "defective" HPF2 WUs please. Thanks.... Go dig into my account. I would also be more than happy to help troubleshoot in any way. I have the beta box checked all the way across the farm. Just ask for more detail, I'll take the time. Get this message to the Techs, the project scientists, or whatever it takes. This has been going on WAY too long, and has lost WCG some very good crunchers. I'm tired of losing teammates because this is not being heard here. Sorry if I may have ruffled feathers, this post is not intended to do this, we just want to crunch WUs that have a chance of completing and doing some good, no matter what our "home" project is. Regards, Bob |

Is this issue so disastrous that all these WUs have no Result Log to copy/paste here?
----------------------------------------If yes, please say it. If no please post one. At least that will help posters to check that the issue is the same for all. For the time being all available info is in the thread title. It's not much. Cheers. Jean. |

The "exclude-a-project-at all-times" option for a project in the profiles is interesting for there is a device group that simply does not like a specific science.
----------------------------------------That said, by chance just figured out that the 2 minute failing of HPF2 on Vista 32, relation to Vista 64 thought improbable, is most likely caused by security software. See http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/printpost?post=212048. Now got it working. WCG has set HCC pretty high in the pool weight, so if you choose this as sole project for a device profile a little buffer of a day or 2 I think you're fairly save to untick the "if there is no work available". Means your client will try to fetch HCC to replenish the buffer and having a few days to achieve that. A Result log would indeed be nice. ciao PS Got the 3GB download of W7 to burn onto a DVD and test spin it. Mainly have a driver concern though not jumping it. First want to research if there are reported problems with my set of wifi.

OK, I 'll purposely turn a machine onto HPF2 and report the logs and any other info that would help here. It should only take me an couple of hours to get enough info...
I'll look into the security idea too. Bob |
