There is something amiss with this project in it's current incarnation. I have 977 valid results returned. Over a year of processing. And it is almost all from 64 bit Vista machines. And then, around February '09, my HPF2 WUs started failing. And now I will not run them and contributing nothing to this project.
----------------------------------------I'm far from expert in these matters, but it seems to me that something changed early this year. It could have been in the project. It could have been a Vista update. It could have been the BOINC client that I use. But HPF2 worked on my AMD dual core and AMD quad core machines, both running 64 bit Vista, well enough through 2008 (I started crunching 2/08) for me to return 977 valid results to the project. I know it is simplistic, but with this in mind, shouldn't the project techs be able to narrow down the time window to roughly 'HPF2 worked up to date X' and then look to see what changed near that date? You starting to only see it in February '09 is pure coincidence, and you probably doing something with BOINC upgrading. It's as old as BOINC 6 API conversion of HPF2. It runs fine on 5.10.45 under Vista and now I got it working again with a 6.6 alpha, but it's no guarentee as others have not succeeded with the alpha version. Just read the thread top to bottom to get the information what all was tried.

I turned "All Projects back on and have since had 21 Valid and 3 Error. Do these error results negatively effect the "reliability" factor of my PC?

Not enough to stop the client from getting work as the throttle down is slower than the throttle up. To get rush jobs, well that needs a uninterrupted series, but is it important? Not for beta testing, just for regular rush jobs.

Thank you Sekerob ... if I don't get rush jobs, well I guess that's OK as there is something about setting "All Projects", "Opt me into new Projects", and "Beta" that just feels right to me on my main crunching machine.

So I have a newly constructed 3.2 GHz i7 950, Intel DX58SO motherboard, OCZ tri-channel platinum DDR3 1600 memory, Western Digital 1TB Hard drive and Diamond HD4850 graphics card and running Windows Vista 64-bit Ultimate...
This new configuration began running WUs over the last few days. I have noticed a number of HPF II work units successful, but have also noticed a number of them that compute for ~1hour 30 minutes (on only marginally watched average) before they fail with a "Computation Error" termination. I have never knowingly experienced errors over the years so haven't really learned where to find all of the error information. What I do see is from the "Messages" tab, where it says: Output file <WU name> for task <WU name> absent If I were to dig deeper, would I find this is the same root cause or something different altogether? I admit I have not reviewed the full line of posts/responses, sorry. If I should dig deeper, where should I be looking? This ONLY seems to have been occurring with HPF II... ![]() |

Output file <WU name> for task <WU name> absent This line is only the consequence of the error. To know more you have to look at the Result Log of the WU. In your Results Status page look for the WU in error and click on "Error" to display the Result Log. I don't promise that the error message will be explicit, but at least you will be able to post it here. Note: if you have plenty of results you can use the "Result Status" filter to display only WUs in error. Also if you have too many errors for this project you might choose to remove it from the corresponding device profile. There are enough "all project" devices in WCG which will still crunch for it. Cheers. Jean. |

Thanks for the pointer. Never had to look before. This is the same core symptom as the other reports. The failures are all with same error:
<core_client_version>6.2.28</core_client_version> <![CDATA[ <message> Incorrect function. (0x1) - exit code 1 (0x1) </message> <stderr_txt> ERROR:: Exit at: .\dock_structure.cc line:401 </stderr_txt> ]]> I see 3 valid, 8 pending validation and 15 failures (roughly 1 per hour). All but one of the failures seem to show less runtime than I am pretty sure I saw a few, but no guarantees there. Reboots occurred while Vista applied updates automatically before I turned that off. Some failures occurred each time quite quickly, but possibly coincidence. Regardless, it seems as if the failure rate is too high to continue with Vista 64-bit Ultimate. Concur? |

Hello doug_sanchez,
I concur. Either Vista 64 or HPF2 should go. The easiest thing to do is to exclude HPF2. Other machines will pick up the load and keep HPF2 on track. Lawrence |

Reboots occurred while Vista applied updates automatically before I turned that off. I don't know if it's available with Vista but with XP I have set Windows Update to "download and tell me". Then I run updates when and the way I want. I don't want MS to play with my machines without me having a look at it, at least. Cheers. Jean. |
