Gentlemen:
----------------------------------------I have no issues with this rice project and even beleive it may be of some great importance but it ticks me off to no end that although I have the FAAH WU checked in my profile and yes I do have send me other projects if their are none available for the FAAH project I am getting pounded with these rice work units. I've already gone through and aborted almost 100 of them but today I look and there's more. I realise that you may want to get these out and done but what the heck happened to "OUR" ability to choose which project we want to work on? It's like what I want is of no consequence and what you want is. Not fair at all to the users to be treated this way. It is a royal pain in the backside to go down the lists one by one deleting these rice WU and I have only 4 machines to deal with. One of my teammates is in the same situation and he has well over 100 machines on the project. Immense job to clear all of those of unwanted work units. All I'm asking is a little consideration of our wants to be included in your decisions. Thanks for reading. ![]() |

I can think of a couple of possible solutions to this other than no autoselection whatsoever:
----------------------------------------1. Create a new 'protected' profile that you can use which WCG is not allowed to change without informing you. 2. Only automatically add new projects to those profiles which have elected to crunch all projects - any that have been modified to select specific projects be left unaltered. I don't know if any of the above is technically possible to do though ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 15, 2008 8:34:39 PM] |

Now if WCG tossed out a statement saying "Hey guys, we need a lot of help on this particular project for the next week" i'd be the first one to come and help but thats if asked, not having it dumped on you. Just some common courtesy and an appreciation of others wants is all I'm asking for. ![]() |

I just went and checked my "profiles"..Not something that I do often as I'd set them as I wanted them and thought that only I could change them.
----------------------------------------I was wrong. On every profile the Rice project was added and checked and this was not done by me. So the WCG project has taken it upon themself to tell everyone that we will run not what we want but what they want. This is plain wrong and should be undone as soon as possible. If you want someone to add a project send out an email and ask. Don't just stuff it down peoples throats. You have people that run certain projects for very personal reasons. People that have lost loved ones to various diseases and it has to be the end users decision as to what projects they run. I volunteer my machines to run the AIDS project and thats what I expect them to be doing. Not running what someone else tells me I have to do. Yes, I am very upset at what has been done here and want to see it undone ASAP. Either we deal with one another with respect or we don't and you already know how important that word is to me. ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Movieman at May 15, 2008 9:48:41 PM] |

I'll ask the back room again about auto opt-in for new projects. This comes up whenever something new appears (except African Climate, which had extremely high requirements).
----------------------------------------I can think of a couple of possible solutions to this other than no autoselection whatsoever: These are interesting ideas, and certainly do sound feasible, technically. 1. Create a new 'protected' profile that you can use which WCG is not allowed to change without informing you. 2. Only automatically add new projects to those profiles which have elected to crunch all projects - any that have been modified to select specific projects be left unaltered. I don't know if any of the above is technically possible to do though (my own opinion) 1. may be difficult, since we're dealing with the standard BOINC profiles of default, home, school, work. Perhaps the script could just hit the default, and leave the others alone. You have four choices of profile to assign to specific devices. 2. should be very easy ... just add another decision to the opt-in script.

As I said above, if you need a lot of work done on any project in a hurry, just send out an email and ask. Just courtesy is all I'm asking. Thanks. ![]() |

Some have also complained about getting e-mails, so the quantity is extremely limited. Once in awhile one comes along. Even "once in awhile" is too many for some.
----------------------------------------That also causes resistance to setting up e-mail compatability on the forums. You will notice that there isn't any. In the meantime, just uncheck it if you don't want to run it for 14 days to get a little forum badge at the left. The next project will bring up this controversy anew. The BOINC projects with only ONE project, like SETI, don't have the problem of a richness of projects, causing problems like this. I don't recall any little green men found, either. In the meantime, the opt-in problem will be discussed by the techs, and I flagged this thread for them in case any more new ideas come along.

Hard to beleive that someone would have an issue with an email bringing news from the project but I suppose there may be people that it would bother. I'm back to just add the box, leave it unchecked and notify the members in some manner whether email, forum announcements or smoke signals that there is a new project if they choose to be involved. Thanks for taking the time to comment and to send this on to the staff to see. ![]() |

We've also found that only a very small percentage read the forum announcements also. We always see several messages saying "what happened?" even though an announcement was made.
----------------------------------------That may be why the auto opt-in came along. Got'ta lead em to water but can't make 'em crunch. ![]() I'm not making excuses ... just observing what I see.

And you are dead on right with those statements. I'm back to email being the best option. If there are people that have an issue with WCG sending them an email to announce and explain a new project thats their problem, not WCG's. Email is the best way to communicate to everyone in one mass mailing. No one can say they weren't informed, thats for sure. ![]() |
