Re: A complaint

It is evident that my complaints and viewpoints are falling on deaf ears.

If the same new project rollout procedure is used the next time, WCG will have seen the last of my machine time.

DDTUNG cool
Promise?

They're somewhat busy now working on a couple of beta runs. They don't have to worry about the next project opt-in until the next project.

That looks like you're trying to goad DDTung. Do you actually mean to do that, or was that just a slip?

Re: A complaint

We're just getting tired of the same complaint over and over by the same people. The techs registered the complaint after the first one. Who's goading whom? It's mostly Xtreme Systems team that's doing the complaining for some reason. Statistically that's just way out of whack, so something else must be going on.

Best solution to me seems to add an option somewhere in the user preferences or in the profile where the user can choose whether to auto opt-in on new projects or not.
also a good solution

Whatever solution they come up with may or may not be able to be implemeted until WCG can put the UD version to bed and go with pure BOINC.

Re: A complaint

While not a member of Xtreme Systems, I do know what's going on. It's exactly what you've seen here. People put out over being taken for granted and having their efforts count for nothing through no fault of their own.

And a comment like "Promise?" is a clear goad in the context, and inappropriate for a CA. You owe DDTung an apology for that.

i believe it is not that simple. there is a question of the will of the majority here, as well as the risk of new projects being slighted by accident. is it really that hard for them to opt out? it takes me about 60 seconds on 3 processors.

Re: A complaint

Go back and read DDTung's earlier post.

How many machines did he have to go through to clear out the unauthorised work?

Around one hundred. Spread over multiple locations.

Would you like to think about that for a moment and see how that fits into your reality.

Thousands of contributors are here to do SPECIFIC work. Some teams are here, for example, to do AIDS work and nothing else. They've made their selections and justifiably believe that they will be doing what they chose. Changing people's profiles without permission at the very least fulfils the intent of the term 'fraud'.

Yes, and they would fall dead, the end of the world would come and the universe would explode, if they would crunch only one workunit from an other project...!!! not talking

Sorry, but this thread is IMHO ever so gratuitous! If there is nothing to complain, then some people convulsivly have to find something, they can complain about. straight face

Cheers

Re: A complaint

yes da i see your point. it is logical and interesting.

from reading new posts, 9 out of 10 people who actually post here seem very happy about a new project that they did not even ask for. that is a lot of people for your 'reality' discussion.

given the total number of volunteers, we may be talking about choosing the 'lesser of 2 evils'.

Re: A complaint

The project itself is not the issue here. Lack of consideration for people with particularly fast machines, leading to large amounts of wasted crunching time and electricity was not helpful.

but having one little checkbox so that contributors could decide for themselves if they wanted automatic project adding could have saved a lot of grief.

There are a lot more forums out there that project contributors use beside this one. Given that less than 700 people have read a news post about the project out of nearly 400, 000 registered members ... your 9 out of 10 really doesn't hold much water.

There are a lot of people here that went through the rubbish dealt out by the old Grid.org. People who don't post in forums but are sensitive to being taken for granted. Every time a new project is slipped onto their profile WCG runs the risk of losing people.

People have the right to decide what work they want to do, and the right to have that decision respected.
