Re: A complaint

but having one little checkbox so that contributors could decide for themselves if they wanted automatic project adding could have saved a lot of grief.

agreed. i would ask the selective crunchers, who know much more than the average volunteer cruncher, to wait until such a system is available. perhaps they can be given some extra credits on their chosen project as compensation.

a couple of other points:

we 'general' crunchers are giving freely to their 'pet projects', even though they are not contributing to ours. i see no need whatever for the attitude being demonstrated here and i can understand why retsof was annoyed.

finally, what if a new 'pet project' comes along one day... and people don't read the emails? that would be shooting one's self in the foot.

Re: A complaint

How about a simple modification to the script that adds the check marks ... if a person has 'Participate in all projects' checked, then add the check mark to new projects ... if they do not, then do not add the check mark for new projects.

I someone has unchecked 'Participate in all projects' then they have obviously made a concious decision that they only want projects that they have selected.

Simple solution?

Xtreme Systems members and opting in or out

Perhaps it's XS team members that are the most upset about this because they have the most invested in the project, per capita. Does that stat exist somewhere, what team has the highest output per member ? It seems likely that XS would be on top. This means that the individuals have significant time and money invested in their contributions, so they will naturally be the most protective, and involved. In the interest of full disclosure, yes, I am a part of XS.

The statistic I'm interested in is how many people have the "Participate in all projects" box checked ? Obviously, they would want to do the new project, what percentage of the computing power would this get by itself ?

It seems that the issue has now been resolved for future projects, and that's a positive to be taken from this. Hopefully the bigger concerns of volunteers wanting control over how their equipment is used will be taken to heart !

No, I don't think so... I guess, many have unchecked the African Climate Project due to the system requirements.

A checkbox, which says "Do not auto opt-in into new projects" would be necessary here.

Now give them the time, and wait, until the UD-Client has finally died... I guess, they understood, what some (very few) crunchers ment with their demand in this thread...

Re: A complaint

Hi don_xvi,

That script consideration was made before and also to test for the 'give me alternate work' option and maybe even consider the Beta opt-in field. It would leave allot on the table I fear. Members will have deselected a specific project for technical reasons, the above mentioned AC@H deselection is pretty general, rather than specific project antagonisms and still would like anything new in the communal concept. A "Give me auto-opt-in for any new project" is to me the most elegant. Add some verbiage during the membership enrolment to ensure awareness not with the 'small print' mumbo in the page 3 footer (exaggerated) and we can walk away from this and not be faced with it every single project launch.

My thinking is on the prudent side. So, we have the attention and it is with the powers that can remedy this and yes as always they are swamped. It's on the agenda. That I can confirm from another place too.

Re: A complaint

For what it's worth, the Rice option was unchecked in my profile. I had to checkmark it in order to receive WUs. It was not automatically checkmarked in my profile.

Could have been related to when you looked (early) and if your profile page was open at time of the auto-update run. Even my UD agents profiles got the tick mark, which caused a few to not be able to save with BOINC projects selected. S..t happens.

Re: A complaint

We're just getting tired of the same complaint over and over by the same people. The techs registered the complaint after the first one. Who's goading whom? It's mostly Xtreme Systems team that's doing the complaining for some reason. Statistically that's just way out of whack, so something else must be going on.

Best solution to me seems to add an option somewhere in the user preferences or in the profile where the user can choose whether to auto opt-in on new projects or not.
also a good solution

Whatever solution they come up with may or may not be able to be implemeted until WCG can put the UD version to bed and go with pure BOINC.

Yes, it is mostly members from XS that have posted against this.
There is no hidden agenda I assure you.
People are pissed that their machines are being redirected without their permission and then at the time involved to one by one on each machine delete the unwanted WU's.
What is so hard to understand on this?
Then restof, I was very surprised to see that comment of yours of "Promise" to DDTUNG.
Not fair my friend at all. I expected better of you on this.
This guy devotes more time, effort and his own money to this project than most any 20 people and do you ever see him over here doing any bragging? No.
He's not that kind of guy at all. Does what he can at great personal cost and without fanfare.
Now for just a minute I want you to sit back and imagine the time involved to one by one go through over 100 machines and at each one go line by line deleting unwanted WU's. I keep a 3 day queue of work to cover myself incase of a server problem as we just went through and when you keep that much there can be 150 WU in queue PER MACHINE.
Think on this times 100 and you start to see the amount of work involved in clearing up the problem.
What has been missed here is that we at Xs work on the principle that we do all we can for a project and ask very little in return.
We do ask, and better said, demand, that we be treated with respect and courtesy. That is not much to ask.
The courtesy part comes into play here with not shuffling our machines onto different projects without our permission.
We have many people that have added the Rice project to their profiles but again, by their own choice.
No one is saying the Rice project isn't worthwhile just saying that it has to be our choice on whether to run it or not.
That simple.
Now I see that Tedi has responded so lets put this thread to bed and let the Admins make a decision as I think they have heard enough to make a educated decision on the matter.
Thanks to all for your input.

From what I have read, here...
I'll ask the back room again about auto opt-in for new projects. This comes up whenever something new appears (except African Climate, which had extremely high requirements).

... for example, this fuss happens "every time there is a new project" - if it happens every time, why has it not been addressed before?

The attitude of some of the forum "officials" here is also is highly dubious.

I "promise" I will review my, and my teams continued support.
