Boy!! Wow!!
----------------------------------------There is no problem with BOINC on my two Vista Machines running 5.10.45, or my two XP machines running 5.10.30. I gave up on Zone Alarm long ago. 7.X ground my two XP machines to a halt, virus checking everyhting I opened even though I had configured ZA to basically just monitor incoming traffic for AV. I went to AVG 7.5 Free and the Windows Firewall, behind my hardware firewall. I have had no trouble with BOINC, no virus problems, Nada. The two Vista machines are running Norton AV only, with the Windows Firewall, again behind the hardware firewall. Again, no problemo. I am sure that most of the over one million BOINC crunchers are having none of these difficulties, or there would be lots more complaints. >>RSM |

I have/had BOINC running on backtrack, Ubuntu, OS X, Win XP, Fedora.
BOINC works well, any problems I have seen have been traced back to problems with the workunits themselves. As far as endpoint solutions, I've evaluated/tested many for work, and had problems/bugs with them all. As most attacks are targeted to buffer overflowing applications today, inbound firewalls are so limited as to be useless, firewalls that filter on in and outbound traffic are better, but not so good for end users to configure. |

malcw, much as I would like to agree with you, this is not BOINC's fault. It is Zone Alarm's fault. BOINC does offer a workaround for Zone Alarm's failure, though. I encourage you to install BOINC as a service and only Use BOINC Manager when you need it. Or, get a better firewall! lol again blaming something else insted of blaming the real problem which in this case is bonic it has more problems then windows and thats saying something and as for zonealarm being a problem nah i wudn't think so since its made by microsoft on and since bonic needs 24/7 internet connection is a big problem easy access for a virus to end up controling ur computer but hey someone whos trained in pc repair knows nothing rite? lol i find it funny how people can be and since bonic is the worst thing u cud ever decid to install if i were u i'd keep to the ud one which is what i'm doing oh and one more thing why change something when it works fine **Edited for intolerance** Members may state their opinions, but they may not make disparaging remarks against other members** [Edit 2 times, last edit by TKH at Apr 17, 2008 1:29:54 PM] |

"zonealarm being a problem nah i wudn't think so since its made by microsoft"
----------------------------------------When did MS buy them? "oh and one more thing why change something when it works fine" it's because the 7 year old database this UD agent depends on cannot be upgraded, since the UD maker themselves don't exist anymore! None of the newer sciences will work properly with this artifact unless substantial duplication of effort is invested by the programmers to keep this single core only piece running.

When did MS buy them? They never did. But hey, we're not computer repair people, so what do we know.

If you don't like BOINC, don't use it. Nobody is forcing a gun to your head are they? Edit: just read the other posts, hopefully I didn't waste too much of my time... P.S. please get a dictionary. and za is made by microsoft u sud check the earlyer versions it says made by microsoft but they droped it the only software they made well they sold it to another company don't know whats its called Zone Alarm was made originally by Zone Labs and heavily pushed by Steve Shields of GRC. It has nothing, had nothing and probably never will have anything to do with Microsoft, but for that it runs on Windows systems. It has now been acquired by Check Point. So, come again?
